I can't imagine how the hdd is formated would make a diffence. The problem is in you're network settings and/or fireall settings. What OS do you have on each computer?

You have to add the IP of the router and the internal IP range of the router to each computer's firewall. Then you will be able to see the shared folders on each computer from one another.... the file system of the hard drives makes no difference.
