I have a Vosonics XS-drive (VP2030) which connected to my desktop via
USB1.1. It needs drivers for Win98 but not XP etc. Will it work with a
PPC?

You need a PPC with USB host ability, and a mass storage driver. With
that said, it should work...

Thanks for that.
I am new to PPCs so plse excuse that.
The PDA that I have in mind is a Fujitsu Siemens Loox710 which does have a
USB port and runs Windows Mobile 2003. Is that sufficient?

From what I can find regarding specification of this unit, it does not
have USB host capabilities. The port on the unit connects via USB to a
PC host for synchronization, but the ability to host USB devices from
the unit itself is lacking. That said, it won't matter what OS or
drivers you run on the unit, you will not be able to host USB connectivity.

Thanks for that.
In the meantime I have been having a look also.
Most supplier's sites are ambiguous. But on the Fujistu Siemens site
http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/pro [...] x_700.html I
found a spec ("Technical overview on the rh menu) that includes the
following for the 710:
Interfaces Interfaces / Data: Consumer IrDa, USB slave, USB host, serial
(RS232), Bluetooth and Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b) integrated.
The disk doesn't have a host capability, of course.
I think that I will see if I can get a response from F-S customer service.
Thanks
Chris

With respect I think the Loox has just that facility. Here is part of a
review from:
"Where the LOOX really excels, however, is in its ability to act as a
USB-host device. This means that, via the sync-charge cable supplied,
you are able to attach USB flash drives, USB hard drives and the like,
and transfer data to and from these to your LOOX. Additionally, you are
able to link the LOOX directly to USB printers and keyboards, although
some devices will require additional drivers. I tested this with a USB
flash drive, and was able to see it via File Explorer, played mp3s from
it. The only downside to the arrangement is that the host facility
requires the sync-charge cable, rather than being able to plug directly
into the machine, but, as so few other PDAs sport this feature, I do not
see it is as being particularly off-putting".

Thanks, that was just what I wanted to hear!
The review is, of course, about the 720 - but I think the 710 is just the
same but without an in-built camera.

Great! Is thats the case, you simply need the USB host cable. Most
manufacturers do not include one with the base kit, you need to order it
as an accessory. Also remember, you need a driver to support mass
storage devices. You can find that here :

OK, it looks hopeful - I'll give it a try then.
Thanks again to "shuffle" and "JnJ" for the info and advice.

Did you not read "This means that, via the sync-charge cable supplied"
in the review. I would be astonished if the Loox did not come with any
necessary USB drivers. You seem to be trying to complicate matters for
the OP.

Alright. Just give it a whirl Chris and report your findings here.
A sync charge cable is -not- a host cable. Trust me on that one.
