No you won't.
At least not with that processor.

I dont know where you'd find a 478 pcie mobo these days.
There were some while back, (see my sig) but 478 is ancient history now.

Either way you'll have to get it from europe... they didn't make any for the US market.

Kinda sketchy piece of silicone. You will definetly want to upgrade the cpu and a better mobo to reduce bottlenecks and performance decrease with a x1900xtx.
HOw deep are your pockets, and do youy plan on OC'ing your system??
If so go with a DFI mobo.
Lets us know whats going on.
BTW you also might need a new psu for that card :D

The CPU is fine. What is he going to buy? A 3.4GHz P4? That won't do anything. I would suggest getting 2gb of RAM to have the X1900XT running full potential.

It's assuming alot to say he/she has a 478 mobo (unless I'm not seeing something here).

I agree with prozac26 - get 2gig ram and the 1900 (it's got loads more potential than the 1800 due to wider pixel pipelines and will run down most new games).

The cpu might hinder performance, but only in the cache department which causes some stalls in game. But's it's largely due to slow mem transfer which unfortunately is the demise of P4's (thanks to Northbridge latency and longer pipeline on Prescott cpu's).

What that means is get more ram, and mem transfer will be beter as there will be less swapping out (1gb vs 2gb) and don't run too high res, as this really eats memory and stuttering will be at the order of the day.

A 1900xt would be overkill for a p4 system, i actually thought about it but then came back to reality and realized the netburst just doesnt have enough oomph for the x1900.

I'm running an x850xt and the cpu can barely keep up with the x850xt, which causes stutering in riddick and oblivion.

I would suggest getting a whole new conroe system in july-august.

Here's my current system (mobo, CPU, RAM, GPU, & PSU) and Newegg prices (excpet for the PSU):

AMD64 3500+ Vencie >$200
Asus A8N-E $100
Corsair XMS 2x1gb RAM >$200
Sapphire X1900XT $430
PCPower&Cooling510SLI $200

Total comes to $1130, but you can always opt for an Antec for about $100 less. The only thing I have to warn against: the chipset fan on the A8N-E will probably wear out, and you cannot use a heatsink with the X1900XT at the same time. I would recommend shellling out the $50-75 extra for a mobo with a heat pipe instead (just make sure you have adequate air cooling in your case).

My system runs very well, and I've noticed a substantial increase in framerate from my nVidia 7800GTX 256mb card. I run my games at 1920x1200 when possible, so if you're running at lower resolutions, you might not need such a hefty videocard. Either the X1800XT or the 7900GT should suffice and save you a few bucks to boot.
