I'm looking at putting together a system for gaming and video editing, so I'm wanting to build a pretty powerful rig. I've been a longtime AMD fan, so I was leaning towards the Athlon64 X2 4400+ which I can get from Newegg.com for $460.

Then I saw the comparable Pentium D 950 on Newegg.com for $355, over $100 cheaper than the AMD. This shocked me, because I'm used to AMD having the cheaper prices, and that caused me to rethink the whole AMD vs. Intel thing.

So, if I'm looking at high performance for things like gaming, mulitmedia, and all-round multi-tasking, which CPU would you suggest?

Thanks

They are about the same speed but with the Pentium D being way cheaper.

....no

4400+ X2 kicks the D 950 in the nuts, repeatedly.

4400+ X2 will kill thje D950 in almost every application.

Might i recommend the AMD Opteron 165, cheaper dualcore and opterons are better than Athlons. and the same thing for the opteron it will kick the D 950 in the nuts

True that, but I would choose the 950 for it is cheaper. X2 is around $460 and the 950 is at $350. With real life applications the 950 is more than enough I would say. But if money is not a concern here then the X2 4400 would be the better choice.

I would go AMD AM2 4400+ for gaming it will beat the intel 950 on pretty much all games.
