oh wow, still worse than google nexus 7, why isn't this ipad mini not 720p and 16:9 ratio is beyond comprehension
October 23, 2012 7:03:44 PM

Hmm

I think a laptop computer will be faster and cheaper then the pad.

well...im sold on the Nexus 7, i was waiting on the ipad mini showing but its not worth the extra $130 to me, as i have not invested much in the ecosystem. Not hating on Apple, just at this point it seems the N7 is better (IMHO). Plus, im not sure how the iPad mini displays more than the N7 if the N7 has higher resolution? o_O

Wow, double the storage capacity for $100!?

I hate this planet.

I'm curious why they released a new full-size iPad after only 6-8 months of the iPad 3 (I refuse to call it the "new iPad" since it's no longer new or the "iPad third generation" since that's silly). Apple used to have yearly product cycles, and in no world can I see Apple only giving 6-8 months on premiere item. In fact, if you look at their new line-up graphic, they are still selling the iPad 2, but there is no mention of the iPad 3. In addition, they only referenced the iPad 3 a few times in the presentation, but there were many mentions of the iPad 2. It's like they wanted us to forget about the iPad 3. Very strange.

I can only think of two reasons why the iPad 4 would be released -- either they had some supplier issues with the existing iPad 3 (quality control, costs, etc.) or they wanted to make minor changes to counter an upcoming Google 10" or Microsoft Surface tablet. It looks like the only meaningful change between the iPad 3 and the iPad 4 is an upgraded processor. If so, why announce an entirely new product after such a short time? I assume that they were worried about benchmark results with some upcoming competitors (MS or Google), and they wanted to kick out a new iPad that would level those concerns.

OMG SO TIRED OF APPLE RELEASES AND TABLETS AND SMARTPHONES AND SMARTER MINI SMARTPHONE-TABLETS AND SMALLER MINI TABLETS THAT ARE ACTUALLY SMARTPHONES AND MINI-SMARTPHONES THAT ARE ACTUALLY CASIO CALCULATOR WATCHES!@!
I wish they would all just merge into one glorious company and make some really cool stuff, but definitely reduce releases to once every year or two, not this crap releasing every 2-3 months... I'm tired of having to upgrade what I just upgraded because another company thought another company's upgrade wasn't actually an upgrade but THIS upgrade will be worth it and then of course that other company tells another company they STOLE their upgrade so now they can't upgrade because the other company got their upgrade banned.... freakin rediculous world we live in.

This is at least the 6th Apple related article and the day isn't even over yet.
Gee.. If I wanted to read mostly about Apple products than anything I'd go a an Apple oriented website... :(
October 23, 2012 7:47:44 PM

Come on everyone, Apple users need to stand in line to upgrade to the latest model, it's part of their social DNA. They can't help it, it's called the iEnvy gene.

Who would camp out for an iPad 3.1?

Tech site. Largest tech company in the world. Unavoidable.

Tom's editors do have an "Apple Free" version of the site though. They should repost that for everyone so they stop complaining.

iPad Mini? Cool, more fanboi dollar leeching. Suck 'em dry, Apple... suck 'em dry.

...but can it run Crysis?
October 23, 2012 7:55:56 PM

Aluminum instead of plastic but still lighter and thinner than a Nexus 7
October 23, 2012 7:58:14 PM

srhelicityI'm curious why they released a new full-size iPad after only 6-8 months of the iPad 3...

I'm virtually certain that the reason is that they want everything standardized on Lighting (except the iPad 2, which honestly doesn't have much of a reason to exist at this point). At least they started the iPad Mini at 16GB, not 8GB as was rumored.
October 23, 2012 8:06:02 PM

SD storage is at an all time low. I should know, my stocks for SD ram have gone down by 3x. Stragely enough Apple wants you to believe SD storage has stayed the same price for the last 3 years. I actually like how well and smooth the Ipad works (I have both Acer A500 and Ipad), but Apples pricing on memory is ridiculous and really shows their greed. "Why? Because we can!!!"
October 23, 2012 8:07:58 PM

I'm not an apple person, but with the thinness of the mini I'd say it's a very viable tablet. It looks super light and easy to handle for reading and videos. Sure, the N7 has more pixels (a strong plus), but the screen is good enough. I think it'll do well (as always), though lots of people are already eyeing surface and the recently released S3 (plus windows phones). Lots of competition for our $s.
October 23, 2012 8:29:34 PM

cost of parts $120, cost of labor $9, cost of shipping $20, cost of shiny apple logo $180... hello $329.

just speculation on my part.

Toms is supposed to be a tech savvy site and not one person commenting has brought up the A6X?

Is that all you do here these days? Bitch and whine instead of talking tech?

Maybe you're all upset that Apple has the fastest mobile processor?

can't believe the world held its breath or even waited for this

false alarm folks, false alarm.

amazon, nexus, ect are all safe and sound

apple lays a dud

$329 that is like killer price, the world wants around $200

will all the little children taken away from their loving parents working their lives away in some china hell hole of a sweatshop to make these things you would think apple could have been less greedy and released it for around $200, like all the others do. ;)
October 23, 2012 8:41:31 PM

Why so many Apple related news, all their devices look the same imo.
October 23, 2012 8:56:04 PM

It is funny how everyone just looks at the common specs and says the Apple stuff is overpriced. Sure Apple does make a decent profit on their stuff but they generally make a better product. I mean it cost a lot more to make that single piece aluminum back that is does to make the cheap plastic back of the Nexus 7. It's like comparing a Mercedes to a Ford. Sure they both have 4 wheels and engine but there is a big difference in quality and materials. Despite all the Apple bashing that goes on at this site at $329 this thing will sell like hotcakes.
October 23, 2012 8:56:36 PM

HiiiWhy so many Apple related news, all their devices look the same imo.

They don't just look the same, they are pretty much the same thing over and over again - and yet it sells.

What a little child. It's true. Not a single poster has mentioned Apple's new custom chip. What a bunch of crybabies.
October 23, 2012 9:03:10 PM

Everyone forgets that Amazon and Google sell their tablets at cost, whereas Apple were never going to give the Mini away for free. If I didn't already have a Nexus 7 I'd snap one of these up myself. Having lived with the Nexus for a couple of months I have concluded it is pretty much a worthless toy. The so called Project Butter turns into Stodgy Lard once you fill it past 10Gb (I have the 16Gb model) and I really dislike the 16:9 aspect ratio for anything other than video. In comparison to my iPad, the Nexus really doesn't cut it. I still can't get iPlayer and many other key programs to run on this device, the support just isn't there. This was my second Andoid tablet and my second disappointment. Sure the Nexus 7 is cheaper, but you get what you pay for!
October 23, 2012 9:08:24 PM

o joy, the worst pat of all is the IPad Mini will still be a great success even if the Nexus 7 is cheaper and better at the same time... and the IPad 4 is a total waste. Rather call it the IPad 3s or something!

Surface FTW! Nokia 920 FTW!
October 23, 2012 9:34:39 PM

still apples doesn't get it there is a reason the 200 dollar price range is doing so well for the kindle and nexus and nook
October 23, 2012 10:08:11 PM

iPad 16GB $629? should be $300
iPad 32GB $729? should be $325
iPad 64GB $829? should be $375
October 23, 2012 10:59:55 PM

otacon72Those are for tablets with radios... $375 for a 64GB tablet with LTE? Name me one tablet that costs that much. Come back to reality.

Lol how about you (apple fanboi) come back to reality. $800 for a tablet? Most of that is apple tax. If apple made cars, their "Honda Civic" is USD$60,000 with additional $200 to add lightning connector adapter.
October 23, 2012 11:35:03 PM

Apple is not the 'largest' tech company in the world; only the most expensive one at the current stock market; something that will change within 2-3 years at the most.
October 24, 2012 12:43:08 AM

I think it resembles the Nexus7 too much. But I'm sure Apple will sue.
October 24, 2012 1:42:31 AM

ya this is it.. starting of Apple demise.... 829$ for a 64GB model with cellular???? 659 for mini?????

Now chance for android market to grow up... Most stupid decision i have seen since bulldozer...

eternalkpoh wow, still worse than google nexus 7, why isn't this ipad mini not 720p and 16:9 ratio is beyond comprehension

maybe because its an mini version (whoa, the the thought of it) and they want to put in an economical battery

resolution isn't everything
October 24, 2012 1:58:48 AM

They're starting to get a little desperate.

I think I reads somewhere in the samsung apple trial news, that the profit margin is around 40%...

yup it's logo is expensive ... :D
October 24, 2012 5:11:15 PM

Let's see. A relatively low res screen, 16GB of memory costs and addtl $100, it still cannot run real apps, and we have yet another 'connector to nowhere' good only for interfacing with a dock to give us universal ubiquitous USB connectivity.
But to the larger issue common to ALL tablets...they lack integration of a cell function for voice communications that would allow real convergence from one direction, and more importantly, they lack an elegant functional OS integrated secure remote access terminal functionality that would allow one to access another computer, run real applications or query data and to push/pull subsequent data as needed in a form that could easily be deactivated or scrubbed by an admin if lost without carrying around a laptop full of potentially sensitive information posing an enhanced security breach, thus providing convergence at the 'other end'.

Thus we have another over-priced duplicitous device that neither adds to functionality nor that reduces the need to carry a phone and a laptop.

By definition, that renders the entire format, just like the netbooks before them, superfluous without the inclusion of already existing technologies mentioned above that would enable true convergence into a compelling format.
October 24, 2012 9:24:31 PM

As to all the folks so shocked and dismayed as to why the release now? SIMPLE!
One: Christmas!
Two: Microsoft's Surface
You don't wait and merely react passively in the market, you preemptively capture the market spotlight with a competing product.

But as to why tablets at all? They are just overpriced under-poweered novelties without ANY compelling need - and that is ALL tablets!

Why they don't combine the mini with cell phone capabilities and also enable iOS with secure remote access terminal capabilities allowing one to elegantly access remote computers at home or office and to tun real apps and to push or pull data as necessary without the need to carry around a laptop filled with the security exposure created by carrying all of the data that comprises a security breach - thus created a truly converged (remember that heretofore meaningless buzzword???) device that effectively replaces a cellphone and a laptop in the field and provides all of the functionality in a single more secure device would actually come close to presenting a truly compelling product with increased functionality that covers all of the bases at a lower total price point and in a more productive and secure manner.

Until that happens, all of the fanboy angst demonstrated here is simply hot air. And all of the excitement over an uncompelling limited over-priced dumb tablets is just that - dumb.
October 25, 2012 5:50:11 PM

$500 for cheapest of the new iPads huh?
Does it suck your D**K?

Hey crapple, how about you just throw an SD card slot on there instead of jerking people around with the internal memory storage. The actual cost of memory is next to nothing but they charge an arm and a leg for it cause they cut off all other ways to add memory. They charge $200 more for what would be a $20 memory card. That's 1000% more than they should be charging. But the sheep will continue to follow.

Locked down proprietary devices are not the future they are just a way for greedy companies to make money. The iFad will fade eventually...
Tactics like that are why I don't buy their products.
October 26, 2012 12:21:06 AM

If you don't want to buy then don't cry! Having said, I thought Mini is somewhat expensive for 32 GB model?
October 30, 2012 5:50:02 PM

sliemLol how about you (apple fanboi) come back to reality. $800 for a tablet? Most of that is apple tax. If apple made cars, their "Honda Civic" is USD$60,000 with additional $200 to add lightning connector adapter.

Well, let's look at things. If you were to go pay full price for a cell phone, right now. A smart phone at that (not that it matters) with 4G LTE....look at the cash you would pay for the privs of the cellular portion of the piece of hardware.
