This problem has just started recently - it isn't a major problem but its very annoying, and when my dad and sis use the PC, being the nervous novices they are they panick at the sight of this message and blame it on something I've done

I would turn the PC on random occasions and after the POST of all the IDE drives I will be presented with the following error message:

Bad/Checksum Error

F1 to Setup
F2 to Default Settings

I have to then go into Setup and restore all the settings back to what I had, including the Date/time! Otherwise the system starts normally. My dad and sister on the other hand don't know their way around BIOS so they press F2 and the system starts normally with all the system settings restored - when they enter Windows they are prompted to install drivers for the onboard sound and modem which I disabled and the FSB and DRAM timing is running at a slower 100mhz!! So when I return I have to return the settings to put it all right.

I have checked the battery and even replaced it but to no avail - could I have replaced it with a dodgy battery?? I haven't done any BIOS updates and I run the settings at their optimum and the onboard sound, MIDI/Game Port, and modem is disabled as I don't use these features. I have emailed ECS but had no reply!

Any ideas??

Yes, that can happen when the battery on the MB is running low. I would replace the battery (type is 2032) and see if that cures it.

My sister still runs this board with an old Athlon. For the 4 years she's had this, she'd occasionally get this message, or a message stating the boot sector wasn't found. It always occured after a hard power off (soft reboots didn't cause these issues). I always suspected it was the battery, but changing it did nothing to solve the issue.

Last summer, she had corrupted windows beyond "over the phone" repair, so I had her send it down. Now that I had some time to play with it, I was on a mission to fix this problem. Batteries, BIOS updates, switching IDE cables - nothing fixed it. It wasn't until I switched the hard drive to Cable Select (from Master) that the issues went away.

Now, what CS has to do with checksum errors or boot sectors not being found ONLY after hard power downs is beyond me. 15 years of working with computers and I'd never seen that before. Anyways...hope this helps.

Well considering I haven't got any other Drives on the Primary IDE channel (I like to give the Hard disk its dedicated channel for optimum performance) putting the hard disk on Cable Select shouldnt harm it right? 8O

Amazingly I got some shoddy reply from ECS a whole week after I emailed them and they said to go into the BIOS and load the best performance defaults!?! I will try your solution and see if that does the trick. It feels so reassuring to know that I'm not the only one suffering this problem!!

The only thing I can say about this, Never buy ECS
