I'm no lover of Intel, but I don't have such strong feelings against it that I wouldn't consider one of their chips, such as the much-spoken-of Conroe. I'd like to upgrade (well, I'm only really keeping my monitor, hard drive, and stuff like that) my computer this summer, before the fall semester. If the Conroe was predicted to hit sooner (June, perhaps) I would certainly wait to see how it turned out. Unfortunately, it's assumed that it will arrive later than that.

Anyway, to get on with the post, do you think I'd be better off with an AM2 (I have to buy a new motherboard anyway) 4200+ or waiting until Conroe hits? I don't mean in raw performance/price comparison, but do you think that Intel's new baby is going to be worth waiting until this fall for? Ignoring price?

if ur gonna go amd... why go am2 when you can go 939 instead...

its cheaper... does pretty much the same thing...

If it's price you are after you are best off going for a 930 and overclocking =) but if you unconfortable hitting 4.7ghz, which is understandable, a 939 X2 will suit your needs very well. Remember, games are CPU bound =p

Yes you should wait. There are some plausible scenarios, all are in favour of waiting:
a) Conroe performs as hyped then you'll know what to get
b) Conroe performs on par with AM2 but by that time AM2 already has lower prices
c) And the most highly unlikely,Conroe gets beaten by AM2(being roughly equall clock per clock). Then we might expect low prices on Conroe chips as there were on Pentium Ds. However what we do know about these miagical chips is that their thermal and energy output is at least decent and that on the right board they OC well making Conroe a very good buy.

Either way you win.

I'm in favor of buying when you need to buy.
It sounds like the need will not really be there before the fall semester. If you can hold off till the end of august, you should get a much better system, maybe at bargain basement prices. The problem is, you will have to do a lot of homework after july 23rd.

I don't know why people think the chips are being hyped when the actual chips are performing better than the ones shown at IDF.

That's not called being hyped, that's called being crippled.

dont we hate people who lie. Like this quote

dont listen to these guys
i have a conroe B0 and its destroys my amd and intel systems.
just wait and when you see intel keep the price low and go for volume profit just buy what you want. am2 is just a socket. intel has already developed the chipset and ram and stuff for conroe and i think it will all be very affordable compared to the competition.

July 23 when conroe comes out.

its no lie it is way faster than any of the other systems in my lab
straight out of the box with no mods.
i even used the board that had the pressler in it
all i did was take out the pressler and put in the conroe and this system screams

Yeah, we take you very very seriously...

Uh Sid and the like..... you do realize that people have engineering samples right for testing purposes. I have a few dual core Meroms at 1.66GHz at work for Vista testing and also a few other things.

It's way too easy to make up such claims, any 14 years old brat can barge in here and pretend he have access to a lab full of ES CPUs, should I gobble up every single baseless claims and blatant lies I come across just because there might be a slim possibility that it could be the actual truth ?

Pffft, the signal to noise ratio is already near the absolute zero, I would love to be proven wrong but I doubt that either of you guys can deliver.

If you want to be taken seriously, show pictures of the actual machine(s) in that hypothetical lab, some benchmarks and a complete description of the hardware and the test methodology, otherwise you're just adding to the useless hype.

And no, the NDA is not a good excuse, don't talk the talk if you can't walk the walk.

ya thats what i should do. go into my lab with a camera and send sid some pics of my systems. i hope he beliees me because after all it is sid.
sid i am not risking my job even for you. i dont care if you Believe me or not. you can wait until the 07-23 if you want. why are you even reading the forumz if you dont want to Believe any of it?
