Black won't print

Hi all.

I've a problem on my Epson Stylus Photo 830. It won't print black. Well, it
will, but I'm talking just barely. I've tried numerous head cleans. I heard
the head cleaning cycle runs from low, medium, high and then you need to
print something to reset it. Anyway, I've done about 20. I've just up half a
colour cartridge doing head cleaning. I've tried a new cartridge, no change.
I've taken the cartridge out and (while covering the output) kinda shook it
like you would a ketchup bottle. But still it barley prints out.

How can I fix this without buying a new printer.

It's probably not a problem with ink flow from the tank. It's more
likely a printhead clog. As I haven't owned an epson printer in a
while(had issues with their warranty support), I don't know what the
print head assembly looks like in this printer. As such, these are
generic suggestions that work for most printers -- if you can remove
the printhead.

Anyways, congealed ink and paper dust will build up on the inkjet
printheads over time. The printer cleaning cycles usually can't do
much about this stuff, because by the time it becomes a problem, it's
way too thick and heavy for it. If you can reach the printhead, wet a
paper towel, and wipe it horizontally. You should get some stuff that
looks like black clay coming off.

Then get a second paper towel, but just moisten it, don't make it
dripping wet. Take the moistened towel and stick it on the
printhead's jets. Leave it there for a minute or two to dissolve and
draw out any ink clogs that are further up the jet. Reassemble the
printer and it might work then.

If it still doesn't work, put the printhead, jets down on a matt of
moistened paper towel overnight.

This has revived a formerly dead printhead on Canons and Lexmarks a
few times, but it doesn't always work.

It helps to use Windex. Works faster, and immediate cleaning will remove
its traces.

Either the print head is clogged, or the controler for it is defective, or
you do infact have a bad cartridge.

Before you try any of the suggestions posted to your question, email Arthur
Enlich and request his Epson cleaning document. This is the most concise,
best information for cleaning an Epson print head. It worked great for my
Epson Stylus 900. DO NOT REMOVE THE PRINT HEAD!
