So, sorry for the newbie question, but I've seen a lot of info on here about Intel's upcoming Conroe processor, and people are saying it's gonna be great.
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a "quick and dirty" explanation of what Conroe is, and how it's gonna be better. Bullet points, Pros/Cons, etc, would be great!
So, am I to understand then that Conroe only beats out the top offerings from AMD when it is overclocked? Seems kinda lame.
What makes this processor so good? Why should I buy it?
no that's not the case.
the most common comparison that's floating around is probably the 2.6ghz conroe vs. 2.8ghz athlon FX (which is overlocked as it's originally 2.6ghz). the conroe beats out the 2.8ghz FX by about 20% overall.
there's been a lot of overclocking going on with conroe, but only because it's overclocking so well and there's been a lot of info posted.
in a few days the nda for conroe will be lifted, so we should see some thorough reviews and benchmarks from review sites like this one and anandtech. they'll give the best overall view as to how well it's going to perform.
so far though, conroe looks to be a very good cpu.
Absolutely, and not to mention the EE and with the same price tag of that of the FX-60 or FX-62, Conroe would still able to leave them in the dust without breaking a sweat.
The E6700 chip would be around $550 and can shake down the FX60 overclocked or not.

What makes the Conroe so good??
-Most of the lower end Conroes are gonna beat AMD's top end
-Conroes consume low low power
-Consequently, Conroes run really really cool
-They overclock like crazy, which matters if you care about that
-The price for the CPUs are lower than the CPUs for Intel's today, or in another words, ASP is lower
Equal clocked Conroes outperform AMD's CPUs by:
-20% for low gain
-30-40% for games
-25-30% in average
And did I tell you that they are still not production samples??
