Forbes published an article about the possibility of AMD and ATI merging.

Advanced Micro Devices may be looking to buy graphics company ATI Technologies, a move that would benefit the overall graphics industry, according to RBC Capital Markets.
"The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," wrote analyst Apjit Walia in a note to investors Wednesday. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics."
Well that's up to the controling shareholders. It would definitely be beneficial to ATI shareholders.
ATI has only recently begun to make money... and as volatile as the graphics market is, I'd think ATI would be more than happy to be bought out. Regardless of who's better (nVidia or ATI), nVidia has the money making prowess over ATI.
This move would also exponentially increase nVidia's value to Intel. Intel would almost certainly have to consider buying nVidia. Or at least create a very strong partnership with nVidia.
Looks like the tech business is about to get as exciting as the tech itself!
This would be a really great move, perhaps ATi's chipsets would improve, interaction between AMD CPU and ATi GPU would improve.....(speculation)
From the point of view of the end user, this is really going to divide fanboys, although I think that's the least of their concerns.
Big hardware companies moving together would surely create a more stable environment. Imagine versions of Windows optimised for either side of the fence (ATi/AMD or Intel/nV)
The initial impact to Intel shares alone would be damaging. AMD and ATI could save millions on a merger and place faster CPUs and GPUs out. Maybe AMD can finally close the gap on DDR-2 once they are in bed with ATI. This is the most amazing news since Brangelina. Then again ATI are a bunch of Canadians. They fear mergers.

I doubt this. AMD is too close to nVidia to buy ATi. I mean they just partnered up on the nVidia business platform and Tritium. It would be interesting as to how that would affect Intel and nVidia though. Intel would no longer have Ati for chipsets and nVidia would shit a brick.
I would think that AMD/nVidia would be more likely judging by their relationship.
Forbes also thought Google was dumb enough to try to take on iTunes. I mean Google may be a verb but iPod is a section in Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, etc.
This would be huge!
That was my first thought also. AMD and nVidia are too close for this to happen (AMD/ATi). Why shouldn't they let nVidia and ATi make thirdparty chipsets since the can expand more if they don't have to now compete with nVidia on the grapihics and chipset market.
I think that would erase a lot of the gains they have achieved recently.

It sure would be huge and interesting... also, might be benefactory to end-users - or it might not be (no more nforce amd and radeon xpress intel? - we've seen with uli after nvidia bought it)
However, is it the right conclusion? AMD said they will increase capacity - and they are building/extending Fab 36. How did the merger come into the picture?
But, this might turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Now shareholders might start demanding it.
Very unlikely. I dont think with Intels price drop strategy AMD can afford to take over ATI at this time.
Besides AMD is too close to Nvidia to cut ties with them.

Who knows?
That's one among many points I don't see how this merger could happen...
I agree. Most of AMD processors out there are running on Nforce chipsets at least in the DIY crowd. HP uses ATI chipsets though for its AMD based systems. But I doubt Nvidia would be too happy if the largest markets for its chipsets was to buy the enemy. AMD can't afford to loose Nvidia as a chipset supplier for its processors.

Hey Screw You!! About Half of the Fourm users Are Canadians We don't fear Mergers> look at Jim Carrey and Mike Myers. But just fear merger if it does us More harm than Good. And Since AMD isn't such a Hardcore American Company. Which Intel is. WE welcome the Change
Speaking For all Canadians: "We Embrace a AMD-ATI Merger! "
While it is interesting, I do not see any synergies with an AMD & ATI merger. The would rely drive up research and development costs because such a merger means that AMD/ATI would need to compete against Intel and nVidia as seperate companies. The merged company would need to compete on two fronts to keep shareholders happy.
While ATI may benefit from the fact that ATI chipsets for AMD will most likely increase in market share, there is not much else that I can see.
Perhaps, such a merger of technologies may offer more general purpose GPUs that will do more than merely graphics and video. Perhap the AVIVO concept can be expanded so that the CPU can offload some calulations off to the GPU like floating point calculations. But that doesn't seem to make any sense especially since quad core CPUs are not too far off in the future. Then again, what's the benefit of that to the home user?
Interesting, but I just cannot see it happening unless someone can provide details/insight as to what the synergies are.
Highly unlikely and realy quite undesired because if this happens then all the AMD users will be forced to use ATI and the ATI lovers will have to use AMD. Intel would pair with Nvidia creating a similar situation. The more competitors the better.
And i don't see this happening. AMD has strong ties to Nvidia right now. Also while i consider ATI a great gfx card manufacturer i don't think highly of it when it comes to its chipsets. ATI still has to do some learning and esspecially marketing to even compare with Nvidia. If they aim so high( considering AMD's R&Ds it's a little too high) why not go for Nvidia? It seems more logical this way.
As much as I like AMD, I'd hate to see them buy ATI. I don't want to be forced to purchase an Nvidia card with an Intel processor and vice versa.
I agree. Although it would be good for my beloved little Canadian company, I don't see this merger as very likely. As some have said before, AMD/nVidia is more likely.
This news even though coming from forbes is speculative at best. I agree with jaguarskx, I just do not see the synergies that would gain from this merger. I actually looked for something like this to happen back in 2002 when AMD stock was was closing under $3 a share. Surely if IBM or Nvidia did not merge with AMD back then (AMD's market cap was well under $1 billion at those share prices) then I really cant see it happening today.
Not saying it absolutely won't happen, I just don't see what could be gained from it.
