I am looking to build my first computer. I will be using the PC for basic uses including downloading, internet browsing, cd/dvd burning, and as a music center for my basement. No real video needed outside of the usual music dvd or download. No game playing will be needed. Im pretty much looking for GREAT audio quality since I will be hooking it up to a high powered basement stereo system. I have an old AMD Cybermax computer that is of no real value outside of the computer tower (large with many bays). Outside of that, Im not sure it has any real value. Can anyone give me any thoughts about the products I should buy for such a build? Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

or

Processor: Athlon 64 3000+
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4-F
Case and PSU: Antec Sonata II (450W SmartPower PS)
Video Card: XFX XTreme Geforce 6800 XT
Memory: 1GB Corsair TwinX PC3200 C2
Harddrive: WD 80GB SATA
DVD/CD: NEC 3550A Dual Layer

^If you have around $600

downgrade the video card, memory to 512 and just a regular DVD Player NEC,Lite-On if you don't need all that, although i will recommend getting 1gb memory just in case, but it all depends on you and add a nice sound card

It's funny that you list all those components and then forget to add a sound card when he specifically states that he wants "GREAT" audio.

If you are really into the audio then get a X-fi Xtreme music card from sound blaster. Get at least 1gb of ram and then it really doesn't matter what else you get besides price.

Yeah, great audio is pretty much the main point of the PC. I would like to rip all my CD's and albums to the PC and be able to use it as an audio center. With that and the standard video and internet use, I wont need it for much else. My budget is right around $500. Any other thoughts? I really appreaciate everyone's help.

Well, If you need great Audio, then you must go Creative X-Fi, there basic card costs about $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6829102188

You can save some moeny ang Go with the ZS for $75 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6829102178

I am asuming that the Machine will be running most of the time, so I would go with AMD 3800 X2 for $300, Just because it is dual core, but if you don't want dual core, go with the 3000+.

Any Ausu A8N will do a great Motherboard.

RAM's Go Corsail or Kingston, if you don't over clock, Value RAM will do just fine.

Hard Drive is up to you, but Western Digital seams to be the best right now.
Seagate 7200.10 seems Great, but is just came out.

If you only going to use the video Card to watch DVD's, then you must go with an ATI Card X1000, With their AVIVO, they deliver a much better picture that Nvidia cards, I would say go with X1600.

THE NEC Drives are Getting the best Rating now.

NOW, THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!!! Your power suplay, for the sake of all that is Good and pure, Buy a good one, Antic true power 550 it Great an afordable, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 817103932.
Please don't get any $30 cheeepooooo.

Why would I need such an expensive video card if all the video I'll be watching may be a DVD and internet browsing? Any other thoughts for a video card?

You can go with the X1300 if you will not game what so ever.

in my opinion:
get a CPU good of ripping and things like that (look at the toms chart) then get 1gb ram, and a cheap GPU (could be one with avio or purevidio if you think you need it) get avery nice soundcard, or at least as nice as you want to pay for. then just buy everything else cheap..

Re "anyone have any thoughts on video card".

You can pick up a mobo with nvidia 6150/430 quite cheaply and save on the video card.

How's this:
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Shopping/shoppingcart.asp?submit=view
You could spend $100 on a video card and play most of the latest games but you say you dont do that.
You could probably get away with a Audigy 2 zs for like $75. Not sure what kind of audio you plan on doing.

I tried looking at your shopping cart link but it says there isnt anything in the cart. If its only a $25 difference on a decent video card to a good one, I might as well go for the good one...
