My Current Computer

AMD Athlong XP 2700+ 2.16GHz
1 GB PC3200 DDR RAM (value ram)
ATI Radeon 9800pro 128mb AGP
80 GB G-ATA Hard Drive (i think thats the right form?)
480watt PowerLab PSU
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music
MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Nforce 2 Motherboard
Asus CD-ROM/CD-RW 52x Drive
and of course a floppy drive

I have recently been playing games with the Quake 3 engine like Return to Castle Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory and so forth, But I will most likely be playing the new Enemy Territory:Quake Wars when it comes out, which is running the Doom 3 engine.

Oh and I will probably have around $500 to upgrade with

I am mixed between going to socket 939 or saving some more money and going to AM2 or Conroe for future upgrades.

All the help deciding this is truley appreciated. Thank you.

Any suggestions for a Althlon 64 system if i plan to go that route? Unfortunately I will only have $400 to work with now. So I am keeping the Case, PSU, Hard Drive and the X-Fi Sound Card, I need suggestions for:

CPU
Motherboard
Video Card
Ram

I have built my Athlon XP system but after reading some stuff others have posted, I would rate myself as a noobie to this stuff. Anyway I am really relying on some suggestions......Please Help Me

Thank You

Going to AM2 now will not cost any more than going to socket 939 except you will need new ram, but ram is cheap. You can get a Gig of DDR2-667 for like $80 or less.
You could go with a inexpensive Sempron64 or Athlon 64 and wait till the X2's or 65nm X2's are affordable.

Listen to Chuck.. That will give you one hell of a boost on performance. Only thing I would recomend is get another stick of ram down the road, but that can wait.
