can't detect pqi turbo ddr2 667 ram latency properly?

hi,

i am new here and i have a question about ram latency. i just bought a stick of 1gb pqi turbo ddr2 667 ram that should have timings of 4-4-4-12 according to both newegg and the label on the stick. i put the stick into my ECS RC410L/800-M motherboard (2 memory slots, one empty), and cpu-z reports its a 5-5-5-15 stick.

The bios doesn't let me set the timing. But before i even attempt to think about setting the timing manually, shouldn't the motherboard read the latency, etc. from a little chip on the stick automatically? and if this is the case and that the process never goes wrong, could it be that PQI made a slow ram and labeled it as fast?

Or is it my motherboard that's causing the slow speed reporting?

Thanks for any suggestions!

cpu-z reports its as a 5-5-5-15 stick is because it (CPU-z) is reading off the SPD (Serial Present Detect).
As the label suggests, it should support a timing of 4-4-4-12.....that you may have to set manually!!
When you say the BIOS dont let you set the timing manually......you mean the memory timing settings arent highlighted??
You may have to select "Set Memory Timing" and set it to manual before you can play around with the timings themselves!!!

I am not all that familiar with your motherboard BIOS settings but I have seen BIOSs where very limited adjustable memory timings were available to users!!

but if the memory is 4-4-4-12 and the spd says such, wouldn't the motherboard report the same? is there any reason why it would report something different?

Werent the timings 4-4-4-12 on the label and Newegg??
The spd rom chip may still have higher timings at 5-5-5-15!!
When you say "but if the memory is 4-4-4-12 and the spd says such, wouldn't the motherboard report the same?"
Are you reading it in the BIOS or reading it once you're in Windows through a motherboard monitoring software??

i have the same ram....the SPD settings detect the 5-5-5-15 at 1.8volts. the memory is rated to run at 2.0volts at 4-4-4-12-16. Simple go into BIOS and change to voltage to 2 and set the speeds. its a simple fix.

i found out about the 5-5-5-15 timing from cpu-z, so its within the windows environment already.

do they differ from the bios detection?

Bingo, like y0bailey says, you need to go into the bios and set it to 4-4-4-12 @ 2.0V
You never know, you might even be able to set it even tighter than that!!
