Morning all. I'm upgrading my sons computer to SLI. Just got an ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard. Will be using a AMD A64 4000+, 2Gig Corsair memory, S.B. Audigy 2 ZS, Maxtor 300Gig PATA H.D. generic cd-rom/dvd-rom drive. I'm trying to decide on a couple of video cards. My son suggested the 7600GT but I'm not too thrilled with a 128bit interface compared to the normal 256bit. Was looking at 256Mb 7900Gt cards but now I'm starting to read about problems with them and compatability issues with the A8N-SLI motherboard. Only thing "safe" appears to be the 256Mb 7800GT cards. Any issues with this card anyone know about? Some reason the 7800Gt and 7900Gt cost the same? I would think the 7800GT would be cheaper. What about the 7800GS? Don't know a thing about this card. Any advice would be helpfull.
My own computer has a 3000+, 1gig ram, A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard and a pair of 6800GS cards. This can play all the games I have thrown at it and frame rates are excellent.

The 7800GS is an AGP card the other two are PCI E, I would go with the 7900GT pretty good card for the price at the moment if your willing to pay that much. You can always RMA the card if it doesn't work properly but I don't think you should have any problems.

It is better to get one good graphics card than to get two not so good card and put them SLI. SLI is over rated and you could find yourself getting dissapointed if you spend too much.

I agree :-D

I would recommend a single 7900GT / GTX or X1900XT/XTX

I also think you should buy a single card, like 1900XTX or 7900GTX (etc...)

The money you would save could go on an extra gig of RAM for your PC, or upgrading those 6800s!

True. Also, nowadays building a PC will require you to get 2gb of RAM (most of the time) to have you're PC running at full potential. You don't want to have 1gb of RAM with a 7900GTX or X1900XT and a FX60, what would look dumb.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have an XFX 256Mb 7900GT card on order. Sons computer already has 2Gigs of ram. As I understand it Windows XP might have a problem accessing 4 Gigs so its not worth buying anymore for me.

More RAM is always better under Linux / *BSD / *nix

XP 32 will see about 3.5GB out of 4GB so it will benefit from the extra RAM.

XP 64 should see all 4GB.
