Cingular Vs. Nextel

I'm looking for new cell service.

I was wondering if anyone can help give me a comparison and their
thoughts on Cingular Vs. Nextel. I want to know it all. Dropped calls,
coverage, customer service, etc.

Both have services I like and there is little overlap.

I do plan to use this around Albany County (and surrounding area's)
and Sullivan County (and surrounding area's) of New York.

Please be honest. I don't want to get screwed like I did with Verizon.

Nextel is horrible. If you want most of your incoming calls going straight
to voicemail, "system busy" most of the time when trying to make outgoing
calls, outgoing calls mysteriously disconnecting while dialing, outgoing
calls one way (you can hear them, they can't hear you), CONNECTED calls (it
happens sometimes) with horrible echoes on BOTH ends, and frequent
disonnects, then you will love Nextel. Other than that, anything is better
than Nextel. -Dave (nextel DIE DIE DIE!!!!)

Here's honesty.

You are talking about using it in areas, extremely rural, with mountains
and valleys. Nextel doesn't have enough coverage in these areas anyway
so they should not be considered. I have Cingular and Verizon. Verizon
might be just slightly better in those areas than Cingular, just
slightly if at all. If you think that traveling in areas like this, and
less populated surrounding areas, and not getting a dropped call means
that you are getting screwed, then you will never be happy with any
service and you have totally unrealistic expectations about using a
cellular phone.

I relize I can't escape dropped calls. But which has less. In the past
I have used Verizon but they kept double billing me adding and taking
away features with out my knowledge. I'm using Virgin right now but
they are expensive (It's pre-pay it's a given) and have some glitches
and bad custamer service.

I'm looking at what will be the best for me. right now and I'm trying
to find out what real people think not what I am being told by those
trying to sell me something.

I dropped NexTel in the Philadelphia area because their messaging wasn't
reliable enough. For instance, I'd get an urgent message from somebody on
Monday or Tuesday saying "Pete, it's 10:30 Sunday morning and we need you onsite
asap.".

After a few calls to their support desk, somebody finally admitted that they
just took the whole messaging system down for maintainence sometimes. Must've
been frequently on Sundays...because that was definately *the* problem day.

I have Cingular now. I don't think anybody *loves* their cell phone provider,
but Cingular hasn't been all that bad. My only current gripe (beyond lousy
support - which is probably universal...) is that they've closed their walk-in
repair facilities around here.

Pete,

I deffently agree that no carrier is perfect. I have yet to
figure out why each carrier has there own way to screw the casumer.
I'm just trying to find one that won't be to painful :)

One thing i can say from personal experience.....Nextel has better customer
service than Cingular. If you go with Cingular and have no need to call
customer service you will be ok. I use Nextel for my business and the "free
incoming" cant be beat!

I would agree with that 100%. In fact, the reason I dropped Nextel was that a
service rep actually told me the real story about something....what impressed me
was that he actually *knew*...as opposed to reading from a script.

What did the nextel rep tell you? Although you have me a bit confused.
You said you agree with the previous poster about liking Nextel then
you tell us you droped Nextel. WHy did you drop Nextel?

Well, among your considerations you need to keep in mind that NEXTEL is NOT
cellular OR PCS. They are a 2-way company and are not governed by the same laws
that the other carriers are governed by.

Not only that their handsets sound like 2-way walkie talkies when calling
"phones"!

He told me that the reason I was getting voicemail and text messages days late
was that Nextel was routinely taking down the system that handled them - as
opposed to cutting over to backup for the outage period. My recollection was
that they had no compunctions about just shutting down the PC(s?) that handled
those functions while maintainence was performed - often on Sunday.]]

That was awhile ago and in the Philadelphia PA area - no telling what they're
doing now - but at the time, as much as I liked NexTel, I didn't feel that I
could live with that.

I'm currently not in a situation where I live and die by my client's messages -
so if somebody told me that NexTel offered a multi-phone plan that would get me
3 phones for sixty dollars per month or less (it's costing me sixty via
Cingular) I'd have to think about switching back to NexTel.

I used NexTel for over three years and never noticed anything like that.

My son-in-law uses NexTel now and doesn't notice anything like that.

No should there be any such difference -- Motorola iDEN technology as used by
NEXTEL is comparable in sound quality to GSM and CDMA.
