I bought a Pentium D 940 processor and the Intel label on the box has a stamped key on the top right hand corner. Does anybody know what the key means? Is the CPU limited in some way?
Thanks!

Let's see if it works. Here is the key that I'm talking about.

I have a few ideas:

1. Secure virtualization (VT) is the most likely.
2. TCPA compliant (but that is more a motherboard/chipset feature...)
3. Locked multiplier.

hey... tell me onething if its working fine... and your having no problems with temps, wot so ever... then i suggest well better forget abt that key... or you can goto intel support section and check there if this key thing means something... i don't know maybe someone else does...

Thanks. I will try Intel Support. I will let you know what Intel says.

I don't know for some reason I'm not convinced with Intel's response. Here is Intel's response via e-mail "This key is a security feature in order to assure that you have a genuine authentic Intel(R) processor". What do you think?

sounds like they dont know either

Like the hologram in Windows CD's? Sounds and looks a bit *easy to counterfeit* to me. Could be the way they stop that from happening. That seems to be the trend these days, with microsoft and all.

VT is not it, as the same key appears on my Celeron D 310 box. I believe Intel when they say it is a security measure to prevent counterfeiting. In the pic it looks like a black key, but the key is actually painted a metallic purple, and may have color-change pigment, because at certain angles it looks deep navy blue.

A "key" logo on the side of the box wow must be security feature as Intel have said it huh? I think it's just for a false sense of security for the costumers to buy it with confidence. But don't mind it that cpu is good anyways. :)

Don't believe those guys saying that crap about the key thingie. Geniune Authentication symbol, what!? with a plain changing ink key symbol? Wow, must be hard to counterfiet that seal.

You dont need the key... its just packaging.... Ive thrown away everythink HSF, instructions, box etc. (I keep the receipt). The 960 CPU still works fine....
