I have a P4 Socket 478 Mobo, and I heard that if you have 2 chips of ram its better to have them in slots 1 and 3 instead of right next to each other. Is this because of heat or some other reason?

If your mobo supports dual channel memory setup this is the most common arrangement for them (some are different).
Check your manual or post your mobo model & make.

Some boards support dual channel mode, which makes the memory pathway 128-bits so long as you use the right pair of slots with a matching pair of memory modules.
