Bypassing any third party software such as Resco File Explorer is there
a way to permately remove a file bypassing the Recycle Bin with my
Windows CE device? I know on the desktop this can be done, but can it
on a portable?

Yup, tap-hold-delete. There is no recycle bin on Pocket PC's
so the file will be gone forever. Don't forget, any file that
you delete from RAM will also be deleted on the desktop computer
on the next synchronization.

Aaaaah, The joys of Crossposting!

HandheldPC and PocketPC both use the same core services (let's
not even start that debate - there are differences, but at a
high level that'll do as an explanation) but fairly different
user interface paradigms.

Tap-hold-delete is great for PocketPC, but it is simply missing
from Handheld PC.

There is no tap&hold user interface paradigm on HPC. We have
to push del on the keyboard, or alt-click, then select delete.

For HPC, you can disable the recycle bin by alt-clicking on the
bin on the desktop, then checking the
"Do not move files to the Recycle Bin, remove immediately on
delete".

Your delete confirmation prompt will now say "Are you sure you
want to delete".

Cheers,
Nick.

Wasn't aware of crossposting, so if it brutally inconvenianced
you in some way or another, i'm sorry.
The post appeared in microsoft.public.pocketpc and I simply
replied to it with what I thought was relevant information.
Since Resco File Explorer was mentioned, I suspected PPC rather
than HPC in this group. There is also much confusion about
'Windows CE' and 'CE' and whatnot among users, and without a
machine description this is what you get: Generalisation for
the receiving group.

Thanks for pointing out the difference between HPC and PPC
and the recycle bin functionality of which I was not aware.

It wasn't a flame - just an observation. It won't have
inconvenienced anyone, so no need to apologise. My apologies
if it seemed like a flame :-) .

Back on topic, I realise my "answer" isn't really addressing
the question. To the best of my knowledge, you can either have
the recycling bin turned on with HPCs, or off, but you cannot
elect to bypass it from explorer if it's turned on. (I wonder
if I could write a little hack to solve this...)

Cheers,
Nick.

It's Monday and it's cold (it is in my office! brr), let's just
forget about it ;)

Might be a silly idea, but do HPC's have Shift buttons, and would
pressing one of those while deleting a file have the same effect
as on desktop pc's --> direct delete without recycle bin?

HPCs do, and no it doesn't - respectively, and unfortunately. Hence
the wondering if a small hack could be written...
Cheers,
Nick

Thanks but I already knew this. How can I temporarily delete a file
without changing any settings on my HPC, like what can be done with
Windows 98? On Windows 98,95 I just hold down shift and delete the
file.

It would be nice Nick. I want to bypass that setting from within
explorer like what can be done on my Windows 98 laptop. Resco File
Explorer allows me to perm delete a file, but I hate having to launch it
all the time. So is it true that PPC users have no recycle bin? Well
I'm not a PPC expert. So to a PPC user using Resco File Explorer would
be the same as using regular explorer?

Thanks Nick

I wish. I have tried it multiple times and it does not work. However
on a CF card there is no recycle bin as files are always deleted. I
believe tht desktop PC's work this way. It must be the Mac that does
not, because floppy disks and removable storage always have a trash on a
Mac, which confuses me again because of the fact that I use both Windows
and Mac I sometimes get them conbfused.

Thanks

Heck, it was the original poster who crossposted. You simply responded.

Neither does mine, hence the first confusion I had. <g>
