to much for a sempron to handle?

im going to build a new system around the am2 socket and i really don't have enough money for a high end computer and later on i can buy a much more powerful cpu or gpu

so would it be better now to go with a 7900gt and pretty much the cheapest cpu for am2 (which would be the sempron 2800)

or go with a amd 3800 x2 and about a $70 gpu

or some where in between

and the main question is if i went with option one would the cheap cpu really bottleneck the nice card

balance CPU with GPU. get the new AM2 +3200 and a 7600GT.
That's a good idea, but the there is no 3200+ for AM2, only 3500+ and higher. 3500+ with 7600GT would be better all around, as the Sempron would be a bottleneck.

7900GT with a Sempron doesn't really make sense.

I would have to recommend that you get an ATI 9600 with 256mb of vram. You won't be dissapointed.

What do you call that? -- oh yeah... a self fullfilling prophecy.

This advice is valid until 07/01/2003.

hahaha! I have a couple of those, not too bad actually :) If the machine is for gaming get the 7900 or my personal favorite, the x1800xt (had to say it), and the sempron, sure it will slow cpu intense games down a bit, but unless all you play is unreal you'll be fine. Course the video card will depricate faster so in the long run you may want a faster cpu then upgrade the video later, but you'll be more unhappy with current game performance. Going middle of the ground on both is kinda dumb as you will have to replace both sooner than a single component later.

well see the reason i would have a sempron and a 7900gt is to fit my budget and then in the future i could just upgrade one which would be cheaper then upgrading both

I realize that. It's just that the Sempron would be too big of a bottleneck.

Not sure where you get your info, but thats not true. Sempron64 is available from 2800+ and up.

nothing wrong with a semp since all the palermo's perform just as nice as the venice's in gaming. just oc it to mid-->>high 2.x ghz and voila fast as hell if u dont mind upping the voltage a bit and the cpu getting a little warmer.
sempron and 7900gt or x1800xt is my call

get a cheaper CPU. later on u can upgrade it when K8L comes out next year.
and u may get a 7600GS, coz it isnt worth to buy a high-end directX9 card when directX10 card is just about launching few months away.

so all in all, the idea is that u get a budget build right now, and you can upgrade your hardware to all next generation hardware(K8L, directX10 GPU) later.

so would a sempron 2800 (srry i keep coming back to this cpu but $68!) bottleneck a 7600gs too bad?

No; that would be a good match of CPU and VPU. With a little overclocking, you could have a pretty fukcin fast machine. Just get some nice RAM.
Some dolt is going to show up here and tell you to buy an ATi card in...

Forget AM2! On the price-to-performance scale, it's rating is atrocious! 939 and 775 are great for now, getting a 939 Venice or a cheap Intel dual-core would be a great way to go. If you really want K8L later though, you might be better off just getting a new motherboard and whatnot when you have the resources. K8L will not be released for a long time so there's no huge anticipation right now...
Also, if it matters to you (sounds like you are anti-Intel), Conroe will be released in July, along with CHEAP i965x boards...then again, killing your gaming time in the summer might sound kind of lame -.-

Oh look, it happened. :p

As far as a recommendation, if you're primarily a gamer you'd be better served with a 7900 GT/X1800 XT and a sempron over a 3800+ X2 and a sub-$100 card for sure.

but if you use your system primarily for other work - image editing, video editing, etc... and gaming is secondary - you'll appreciate the 3800+ X2. get that and a sub-$100 X800 GTO to keep you going until you can afford a good graphics board.
