Recently had HP cartridges 57 &58 refilled ,when i installed them they
both showed empty, took them back and they tested fine at the refill
location. They suggestd taping some contacts on the cartridge run print
test then re rmove the tape. It worked on the #58 but not on the 57.
Tried several times. The cartridge appears to print ok but keep getting
low ink error and have to reset. These are out of my HP 7660 photosmart.
Is there some other corrective action i can try? sorry if this problem
has been addressed before

An old issue. Your printer remembers the serial numbers for 2 sets of carts,
so in order for it to see them as fresh carts, you have to rotate 2 other
carts through the printer. You can either keep 3 sets in storage, in clips,
or have a couple old dead carts handy to rotate through the printer when you
refill.

Or be able to tape over the contacts in two seperate manners, fooling the
cartridge into thinking it's a been cycled through 2 new cartridges, but
still allowing the printer to recognize the cartridge.

If you go this manner, write down the pin layout of what works and what
doesn't, keeping the instructions with your refill kit, so when you refill
it again you will know what to do.

The two contacts to tape up on HP 57/58s that are recommended by most ink
refill websites didn't work on my cartridges. An alternative that works for
me is the top 2 of the second column from the left, taping one at a time,
letting the printer print a calibration page each time, then take the tape
off for the third insertion. Some people reckon you don't have to print a
calibration page on each swap, but I've found this to be unreliable.
Letting it print the calibration page works every time for me. It's also
best to reset the cartridges to 100% before refilling, not after, as these
cartridges seem to like a rest period of several hours after filling to
stabilise, i.e. it's best not to print much or run cleaning cycles
immediately after filling.

Correction.....Tape the top contact for the first swap, then tape the top 2
together for the second swap. It may still work one at a time but I haven't
tried it, and it's easier to tape over 2 anyway than just the second one
down.

I have HP printer which uses 56 & 57 & 58 which I refilled them all once,
and all worked. Then one day the &56 refuses to work and I still can't get
TAPE trick to work.

I am planning to buy some refilled cartrdige to rotate them, but since I
don't use HP printer much so I haven't done so. Actually, I'll need to find
some company sells the thing to store the cartridge not in used.

Last time I ran into few site had #57 & #58 for around $18 a pop, but I
didn't buy any. About #56 (black) many local stores like Wal-Mart, Target
etc. sell it for around $18, sometime they have #58 for around $24 (#57 is
more expensive).

I refill mine so didn't compare the price, and I may check with SAM Clubs
which often has lower price too. I will check with the link above see if I
can find low price for #57 and #58
