AMD Athlon64 3000 socket939
ASUS A8N5X NF4
Kingston ValueRAM 512MB DDR400
XFX 6800XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E X16
Western WD800JB 80GB 7200RPM 8MB
ViewSonic VA1912wb Black 19" DVI 8ms Widescreen LCD

A friend of mine send me a copy of this build, so I recommended him to upgrade:

RAM: CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 2-3-3-6
HD: 160Gig

Any more though or suggestion? The comp is gonna be used for gaming but not top games and short on budget, any help will be appreciated.

See my rig given in my sig. That motherboard is good, if it is with the nForce 4 Rev A3 than it is the same as A8N-E. Take off the stickers with A8N5X 7 Ver. 1.0. There is A8N-E printed on the mainboard. Flash the bios with A8N-E and you will get SATA2 support and more precisious voltage settings. PM me if you want details and more info.

You can buy the 3200+, it is has same price/Mhz as 3000+.

Don't buy the Kingston value RAM, it is CL3. I used it and it couldn't run stable higher than 440MHz at 2.9v with CL 2.5 3-3-8. The RAM I am using is cheaper but better: Patriot DDR-400 CL 2.5 4-4-8 2T 2.5v. At 2.9v I can run it stable on 480MHz CL 2.5 3-3-6 1T. There is "Patriot" label on the chips, I don't know what kind are they.
If you plain to overclock, I will recomend you the Geil Value One DDR-400 CL2.5. They often have the excelent BH-5 chips. BH-5 run stable over 500MHz CL2 at 3.0v.

The hard disk also can be bigger. Threre is a small difference in price between the 80GB and the 160GB models and between the 160GB and the 250GB.

I am not folowing the graphics cards performance, but I think that the 7xxx are better and not much expencive than 6xxx.

Thanks for the input, I am still waiting for more suggestions and I will let my friend know. But I still think he should wait for Core 2 releases and then the price will drop on AMD/Intel CPUs beside Single Core will be the past soon. Not really sure if he's willing to wait that long... but anyway, I am not sure which Rev of A8N5X newegg is selling....

If I, possibly the most hardcore Halo fanboy in all of THG can wait for Halo 3, he can wait for Core 2. You tell him I said that.
