I have a user who has fiddled with settings (should have
been working instead of playing)--she no longer has text
below her icons on her desktop. She has already turned
the machine off or I would try a system restore from
system tools. Anyone have a suggestion besides Repair
from System Recovery CD?

Turning off the machine should not prevent you from turning it back on and
running System Restore.
