I'm having problems with temperatures on my new 3200+. Without overclocking teh temp is reaching 55-56c running prime 95. I've tried reinstalling teh hsf with arctic silver (removing previous compound of course). I've tried running with the system open and an overhead fan blowing on it, but no help. I've tried every imaginable configuration of my 3 8mm case fans and 1 36cfm slot fan. I don't understand why it's running so hot. I've talked to many others and thier temps are in teh mid 30's to low 40's at full load overclocked with teh stock cooler. Is it possible my system is just reading the temp wrong? I know this is dangerous, but i OC'ed it to 2.5hz just to see and it ran stably for 6hrs on prime95 at "63c", would this be possible if the temp was correct?
Yeah, your temps are definitely too warm. On my 3500+ Venice, I'm getting around 36C idle, 42C load (Prime95 for 30 minutes) with the stock AMD cooler. What kind of voltage are you running on your chip? If your using 1.5-1.6V, that could be your reason. Are these temps reported from BIOS, CoreCenter, or what?
I think i've figured out the problem. I read somewhere that the bios originally installed in my motherboard does not recognize the 90mm vs the 130mm Athlon processors so the default voltage is set to 1.5V. I'll try flashing the bios and checking voltage and if that still doesn't work i'll try manually undervolting the processor.
My sempron 2800+ @2300 @ 1.525v gets to 68C in prime95 with an after market copper core cooler on it, shuts the system down with a stock cooler with 28c room temp. Arctic silver takes about a week to set so don't expect it to be great instantly and you don't mention the ambient temp of your room you may just have a higher ambient temp. Right now my sempron is 31c idle with room temps of 16c, in the summer I'll be lucky to have below 45c idle.
I have an MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat. that did the same thing. Under full load the stock HSF sounded like a plane.
I upgraded to an XP-90 with a quieter fan and it was still sitting around 45-50c, down from 60c.
Eventually I learned that the MB set the default CPU voltage at 1.5 When I lowered the voltage the temps dropped about 20c and the world was a better place.
well went home at lunch to try it out. Lowered voltage to 1.4v manually...bios still setting it to 1.5v default even after flash. temp was running 49-50c on prime95 (at least within reasonable range). I'll wait and see for another couple days before going out and buying a new HSF. Yeah ambient temp may be a problem as well. I've got no AC in that room so it probably averages 27c or so. I guess i'll just have to wait until i get a new hsf to overclock.
