I did a clean install of windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and everything seems to be fine except that in windows explorer it is showing an extra CD-Rom drive that I don't have.

i tried uninstalling both of my dvd burners (1 ide & 1 sata) and that didn't solve anything.

the drive doesn't show up in computer management/storage/disk management.

i guess this isn't really hurting anything but it is very weird and i'd like to get rid of it as it is rather confusing.

Are you running any software (Daemon Tools is one) that create virtual DVD drives? ISO creation suites (UltraISO, MagicISO... etc.) also generally come with virtual DVD drivers to mount ISO files to. Remove any such programs you don't need, and configure any you do to remove those drivers for the virtual drive.

I thought of this same thing as i was away and when I come back to check for responses you have confirmed my suspicion.

I feel like an idiot now....been thinking about this for a day now and then the answer comes to me 15 minutes after I post the question.

Thanks for your help...
