I am looking to buy a 20" LCD monitor. I like to game but also do a lot of CAD work. I am looking at the Samsung 204B or the viewsonic VP2130b. The specs look about the same. The samsung seems to be cheaper in price but not in quality per some of the reviews I see. Any ideas? Is there another monitor that is a better choice in the $450-$650 price range.

I bought the VP2030b and am very happy with it. Keep in mind that the 2130 is the 21" model, not 20", so you're getting the same res, just bigger pixels.

One difference is that the Samsung suffers from poor viewing angles, so probably not the best for movie watching at a distance, if you d that.

I spent some time - over about a month - deciding between the 20" 1600x1200 Samsung and Viewsonic and finally chose the Samsung 204B. I'm very happy with it. The differences are subtle and I don't agree with those that complain about the vertical dispersion problems. Both are excellent monitors. Go look at them side by side, driven by the same graphics card. But in the price range you list, you can go 21" 1600 x 1200 and I saw a greater advantage for the Samsung in that comparison. I couldn't come to a good setup on the Viewsonic.

I decided to go with Viewsonic over Samsung mainly because I do a lot of stuff in Linux as well, and the Samsung monitors have that stupid software, with no OSD controls.

I just treated it like I was using a Mac - I just plugged it in, left the software CD in its envelope and started using the monitor.

XP really sucks, huh?
