I've been out of the hard-core loop for just over 3 years, and I need your guys expert advice on upgrading my rig. So, here's my current setup...

1.) mobo: ASUS P4P800SE
2.) CPU: P4 3.2GHz, 512KB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB (s478)
3.) video: PNY GeForce 6600GT 128MB
4.) memory: Corsair ValueSelect 1GB (2x512MB) DDR400 (PC3200)
5.) HD: Western Digital WD1600JS; 160GB S-ATA II

I know I need to make the move from s478 to 775. I know nothing about different chipsets, but I want to upgrade from the 865PE. Video is the tricky one... I'm not using this system for mad gaming or anything, it's mostly for video capture purposes, and I already have add-on cards for that. I like the GT (mainly for the DDR3) and would like to get something in the GeForce 7 series -- but NO dual-DVI! I prefer the VGA/DVI type. And it has to be PCI-e. I did a lil research and came up with a preliminary system...

1.) mobo: ASUS P5WD2
2.) CPU: P4 640 (3.2GHz, 1MB cache, 800MHz FSB, s775)
3.) video: AOpen Aeolus PCX6600GT-DV128
4.) memory: Corsair ValueSelect 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-667
5.) HD: Western Digital WD2500JS; 250GB S-ATA II

Does this look like a decent setup? I'm looking to try and stay in the same price range if possible, if not then I'm willing to spend just a bit more. Please let me know what you guys think. :D

I don't see the sense
upgrading from a 3.2 Northwood to a 3.2 Prescott. You might as well go
dual core at this point in time. Maybe grab a 930 or 940 D, or wait for a
Conroe system. Your ugrade choices really aren't an upgrade. The only
thing better in your new spec, is the bigger HD. GL :)

I guess "conversion" would be a better word than "upgrade." I have to make alot of these puppies, and with the current setup it's impossible to find components, so basically I need suggestions on keeping everything mostly the same, just updating from technology that's being phased out.

I've reconsidered some of the hardware options.. maybe a Pentium D w/compatible board. I've been doing some research and found out dual-cores would benefit the whole encoding process. But my main concern is the video card. These systems will never have any games installed on them, so that's not an issue. I throw in a Euresys GRABLINK Expert2, hook it up to a Toshiba CS6910CL, and use it for taking images and some video. No editing the video afterwards, just take it and save it.
