How does this look?

Everything looks fine in that system. The fact that you have a SLi motherboard but only one graphics card is no problem I have a feeling you're waiting for quad graphics cards. Also, a second pci express x16 link is useful for other things.

I would go AM2 as well, especially for the 65nm CPUs that will be out by years end and offer a nice performance gain. Go with a 4000 or 4400+ AM2 CPU, some DDR2-800 RAM, and the Asus SLI board for AM2 (its like $146).

Yeah, seriously, 939 is all but obsolete now. It may be the most popular AMD socket around at the moment, but give it a few months (or wait until the 65nm CPUs) and it'll be like Socket A is now.

AM2 is definitely the way to go.

This is the first 'critique' I've seen with a 7950. Nice to see that people see it as a viable step up from the 7900 without going 'proper' SLi. It's also great they're not doing a 7650 and 7850.

Thanks for the responses guys appreciate it. What is a good AM2 to go with? I'm not too sure what they are and how much they are. Thanks again!

Socket 939 is the current 'standard' socket for AMD processors.

AM2 is it's replacement. The improvements so far are limited (pretty much just use of DDR2 memory) however it will be the socket for the new 65nm AMD processors, and perhaps whatever AMD come out with after that.

Right now it's not a huge leap forward, but come next upgrade time you'll be glad you went AM2.

Is it faster than the current 939's? Or about the same? Also would I need to get a new MB and new ram because this motherboard needs DDR2?

Here's what I think would be nice:

Motherboard:

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP

AM2 CPU:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor @ 2.2Ghz

RAM:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel

This is kind of expensive set up but Im sure it is fast and highly overclockable.

It's all about the same price, except for the RAM. That is a little more expensive if it was the first one when I searched on newegg. How is this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145034 Same speed it looks like and a $200 difference or so.

Now how does the AM2 stack up with the 939's? I never really used AMD except for my very first computer but that was awhile ago. I've always used Intel so I'm not sure how the AMD thing works. What would be the difference between the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor @ 2.2Ghz and the one I had before AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 2000MHz HT 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor?

The AM2 ones are like the brand newer ones and the 939's are the older ones?

Just wondering how all this setup would be. Thanks again.

You could get a cheaper AM2 cpu, and they are really cheap. Then later when the 65nm X2 is cheap you can upgrade the cpu then. There really is no difference in 939 and AM2 performance wise but it is upgradeable, 939 is not.
