Hi guys,

I have recently been building a new system for myself and am finding it hard to decide which ATi Card to buy. Should i buy an X1800 XT or an X1900 XT.

I am asking this because i heard that if i buy an X1800 XT card now i have to buy the same card (X1800) in Crossfire Edition Master Edition and it won't work with an X1900 Crossfire Edition Master Card in Crossfire Mode.

Could you please give me advice as to whether this is first true, or if i can buy an X1800 XT now and an X1900 Crossfire Master Edition Card later to make them both work together in Crossfire Mode.

Please reply ASAP guys, Much Appreciated.

first of all don't get crossfire, its not worth the price per performance and it is only good if you run at ultra high resolutions like 1600x1200, right the best gfx card out there is a x1900xtx but the x1900xt is a better choice for price for performance, but if you still want good performance and dont want to spend that much the x1800xt for $299 will last you until the new Direct X 10 cards come out sometime around christmas, they will be far more superior to any card out today including a crossfire setup. but if you dont want to buy two new gfx cards in such a short amount of time get the x1900xt, it would last you the longest and give the best performance...

Doing XFire is a price/performance issue you'll have to address yourself. But if you do, then don't go with the 1800XT - you could buy a single 1900XT and save money, get similar performance without the cost of the 2nd card plus its heat and power requirement, let alone the setup hassle. But if you do have a large high res monitor, make no mistake: XFire will show higher performance than a single card. Still go x1900XT if you do XFire.

if you are going to go with crossfire at least get the x1900gt because of the newer technology. The x1800xt is older and still good but will show its age in shader heavy games that are coming out within the next couple of years. As some of the other users here said crossfire is useless because there is not a huge increase in performance. If i were you i would just buy an x1900xt and overclock it to the xtx levels and be done with it

ok, but is it true what i said in my first question that if i get an X1800 XT, then i have to get the same, in Master Card Edition and not an X1900 Master Card Instead?

Secondly, how long do you think it will be before the next range of ATi cards come out that support Direct X10?

Thirdly, would it be better if i got myself an X1900 XT or an X1900 XTX?

Thanks everyone for the advice, much appreciated!!!

Not sure why you wrote that in reply to me. Clearly, I recommended the 1900 whether he did XFire or not.

XFire is NOT useless! See the benchmarks on Toms, Anandtech, etc. It may be moderate to low on the bang per buck scale, but there is no doubt that properly set-up XFired 1900XTs outperform a single card.

I thought there was an 1800 master card but I couldn't find it on Newegg right now. BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! You would not want to do 1800 XFire, period. The only reason to do XFire is if a single 1900 card is not providing the performance you desire (like if you had a large high res monitor). Buy one 1900 rather than going 1800 XFire, save money, save hassle, save heat, save PS problems. No brainer. If you alread have an 1800 and want more performance, buy a 1900XT and then sell the 1800 on ebay or wherever.

Six to nine months? Just a guess.

My limited experience is that the 1900XT is pretty easy to OC. I'd say do it yourself.
