I was planning to buy a notebook in the August/September back to school timeframe. With Merom being a dropin replacement for Yonah, I'm pretty sure I can get one with Core 2 Duo. My question is whether there will be any new mobile graphics cores available by then?

The latest ATI news was about the RV570XT, and it was completely ridiculous. They mention it outperforming the R580 at the same clock speeds with less shader units as well as 2.2GHz GDDR3 RAM. I thought the RV570 was a mainstream part as the "V" implies so it shouldn't be be called the X1950 and using such expensive RAM. I wasn't aware the RV570 would be such a complete redesign. What happened to the R580+ and GDDR4 anyways?

Anyways, with the 80nm parts coming, I was wondering if anything on the mobile segment has been rumoured or announced? I'm looking at something power-efficient and mid-range. A mobile version of the RV535 which is the X1600 die shrink would be nice. It should easily allow a bump in clock speeds from 470MHz/470Mhz to 500MHz/500MHz allowing it to outperform the desktop X1600Pro while achieving lower temperatures and power consumption than the previous Mobility X1600. Certainly, Macbook Pro users woud be pleased. A mobile version of the RV560 would be even better if the power can be controllered.

X1700 has been rumoured for a long time, but nothing has be announced.

That's supposed to be the first 80nm mobile part which would have basically 'double' everything that the X1600 has, 24 shaders 8 texture, 8 ROP and 8 vertex (which would only be 1.6x the X1600's vertex), and 256bit memory.

That's the rumours, and has been since late last year (around the time of the X1900 launch), but things have gotten very quiet since it's expected March due date.

My dream laptop refresh is the Merom (T7200) + X1700 + HD-DVD (or LG MultiDrive [HD&BR]) and HDCP equipped DVI out or HDMI and HDaudio (all promised on the new Napa64 platform).

I would just like to see NV and ATI become a little more predictable in the mobile market in terms of launch date.

The mobile X800 and X1xxx took quite some time after launch, and like Ape said, the X1700 is all but forgotten now. Unless it may just be
ATI's response to the AGP 7600? Well, I highly doubt it, but thats just my wishful thinking

I'm a fan of BD myself, although they really aught to figure out this format war. My dream notebook would pretty much be in line with yours. The configuration for the Mobility X1700 that you list seems very power hungry and hot though. Anyways, I'll cross my fingers that 3 months is enough time for ATI to release something impressive. Hopefully it'll be pin compatible with the X1600 like Merom is with Yonah for a quick transition.

I'm actually excited about the new ASUS W1J with HDMI.

I always wanted a average sized 15.4" notebook that can record television not a 17" clunker. Hopefully the W1J is light and has decent battery life or else I'll stick with the ASUS W3J.

BTW, I'm sure this has been asked before, but how does the Mobility X1600 at it's nominal 470MHz/470MHz clock speeds compare to the desktop X1600Pro. It has slower core clock speed, but quite a bit faster memory so I'd think it be a wash or a bit faster. Probably quite a bit slower than the X1600XT though.

The Reason I like HD-DVD, they have a fallback 480i on all of them sofar, so they could play on my player, my sister's laptop, and my parent's DVD player, albeit in standard DVD, which is fine for them, and a nice benifit over BD.

Yeah but nothing compared to the X1800/1900 GF7800/GF7900 chips. So being a picture/audio/video editing guys with a penchant for Oblivion, it'd be a nice balance between the effiicent X1600 and the more power hungry larger models. Something more in line with the GF7600GO.

I don't know about that, might be harder, especially if it is 256bit memory as expected (although that is done on the package level and their 'EasyFit' design. The X1600 was pin compatible with the X700, but expecting that to continue into the X1700 might be alot to ask for, but who knows, especially since the memory is right there on the package. (therefore the pins are after the fact and almost act like the general PCIe connector.

Yeah it is nice, but I still prefer a 17", with a full keyboard (with numpad) like I currently enjoy.

Funny thing is my 17" is less bulky than my previous 14" DULL (also same bezel case as 15" model). It's quite nice, especially since it's not as deep (great for air travel).

This should help, although it's and 'XT';

The Mobility should outperform the 'Pro' in most situations.

Yeah it's a bit slower than the XT, but as you crank the resolution the Mobility does pretty well compared to the competition, but turn on the AA and it falters again.
