Hey, my pc has been suffering recently as the hot ambient temp has caused my HDD to start overheating and crashing when left on for any amount of time. :(

This is in a SFF case and so there is no room for extra fans. Are there any programs out there to turn down the speed of the HDD to make it produce less heat?

I've currently got the fans turned right up and the case cover off to allow it to stay cool. Its a Maxtor DiamondMax 80GB SATA if that helps.

Any help would be massively appreciated! Thanks :)

Some drives have a performance mode and a quiet mode. Quiet mode usually generates less heat as well as less noise. Not sure how much difference this will make.

Shuttle also sells case covers, which you could then mod to incorporate an fan for use durring summer months.

Another solution might be to leave the case off whenever your room temp is too high.

You can also have your hard drive shutdown after so many minutes of inactivity.

In any case you will want to have backups of anything you can't bar to lose.

Thanks Codesmith! :D Some great suggestions there.

My case isn't actually a shuttle, merely a "mini tower" asus, which is about twice the size of a shuttle, which you would think would help the airflow, tho it would appear they haven't factored in the HDD. It sits on its side against the front of the case with no vents or fan placements nearby. :(

I think i will mod my case a bit to help ventilation, and maybe take out the floppy drive that i never use to aid that further. However, i'd probably want to lower the drive speed a bit for lower temps too. I'd forgotten you can turn off the HDD, so thatnks for that thought, but how do you think you can find that quiet mode option you talked about? Would i need special software from the manufacturer, to change a jumper on the HDD, or maybe just have a look in device manager?

Thanks again

Its set via a boot utility from the manufacturer. Usually the same utility that is used to run diagnostic tests or it can also be part of a seperate install untility (clones hard drives, installs overlay software for old system with hard drive limits ..).

Rather than keep a dozens of floppys laying arround I just keep handy the latest version of the Ultimate Boot CD, which has every usefull free boot utility you could want.

i build approx.25 pcs a week a few shuttles here and there. best heat remedy for small micro atx or itx cases is a slot fan witch screws in a pci bay usually a good one of 2500 rpm or better is required for a big diff in temp. COMPDOKKTOR@aol.com
