These are getting harder to come by online and impossible to find at retail, are they no longer in production? I want to get two BFG's 7800gts to run in SLI, but can only afford one right now. Is this a case of if I buy one and try to find one later I will be Shite out of luck? I have heard that they blow away the 7900 series and have less stability problems.

hrmmm no..

7900s would demolish any 7800. if your looking to get a gfx card i would recommend getting the 7900GT its a damn good card for the price, but there is also the ATi X1800XT which is also very good. And lastly if you don't have enough money to buy 2 in SLi now there is no reason to get SLi at all, its price for performance is terrible, and i doubt you have a monitor that can run at 1600x1200 resolution cause thats the only res you'll actually use SLi at...so just get a 7900GT

I appreciate your help, thanks.

7900GT is cheaper than 7800GTX and performs better. And the 7900GT costs less than a 7800GT. I wouldn't buy any 7800 card right now. They're no longer in production, and are rare and expensive.

If you cannot afford two cards at same time (or within short time span), there's no need for SLI.

Actually the 7900GT is priced almost identically to the 7800GT; as to the stability issue he refered to, it is true with some overclocked 7900GTs, but I wouldn't worry about something your warranty will cover.

Yep 7900 is a much better choice. I'd get the GT instead of the GTX cause of price/perf. ratio

The 7800GT was a great card, and now the 7900GT is even better.

If you're looking at the 7900GT, you should also look at the X1800XT. You can get one for as little as $217 (after rebate). They perform similar or better to the 7900GT, and they can do HDR+AA at the same time. Or you can spend a little bit more and get an open-box X1900XT for $320, which is a great price for a card that compares to the 7900GTX.

Agreed. $217 AR X1800XT and then $239 AR 7900GT are the best choices under $300. Good to see the Sappire rebate come back as well as 7900GT prices drop. But new X1900XT for $370 and OB for $320 is starting to look good.

To the OP, the stability issues with the 7900GT's is a real issue worth considering. Just in case, I'd go with an EVGA who has shown to not only admit there is a problem but to also act quickly to resolve the problem. The 7800's didn't have that issue, but they are not good buys at current pricing. of course it all depends where you are from and your pricing. If 7800GT's saved you 20% over 7900GT's, then that would be fine. But I'd suspect that pricing is doubtful. if anything, the 7900GT is the lower priced of the two now.

It's amazing you can get an NF4 mobo, retail A64 3500+, and X1800XT for under $400 inc. shipping now. That's a good start for a screaming budget friendly machine.

Abit NF4 $49 AR

A64 3500+ $115

X1800XT $223 AR

Too bad you can't do that here in Canada

That's the first I've heard of it. The X1800 series was considered a bit of an FX 5800/5900 episode I thought. After all the hype that ATi would finally release something decent (to beat the current leader, the 7800 series) it was pretty much destroyed by the 7800GTX which had been out a while longer. Maybe the XT is better if it is so cheap, but the XL was a waste and I'm pretty sure the 7900GT makes better long-term sense.

Google for benchmarks comparing the 7900GT to the X1800XT. They perform about the same.

While that is a nice suggestion...

For the price of two 7800GTs, he can get a 7950GX2, which is basically two 7900GTXs on one card.

Two 7900GTs on one card, not GTXs.

You must have been checking low res no fsaa benchmarks. The X1800XT beat out the 7800GTX and took the top bragging rights. But then NV responded with the faster clocked 512MB 7800GTX and although it was rare and expensive, it easily regained the performance crown again.

to be honest with you i wouldnt get ne thing just yet if you can wait skip the entire system scpraping event or in your case upgrade dont do any thing wait save your money then buy an dx10 ready system and the end of the year you will be very happy if you just wait but thats just my 2 cents

I was happy with a single 7800GT until getting Oblivion. I considered buying a second 7800GT but then saw that a single X1800XT was cheaper and outperformed SLI 7800GT in the game I was upgrading for. In most other games dual 7800GT would be better.

The only thing I could compare the X1800 series to the FX series is the cooling solution. Yes it can get quite noisy, but the preformance is there. The problem with FX was poor DX9 implementation and preformance, which is why a 9700pro can kill any FX series in most current benchies.

Seeing as how the shader preformance has taken the charts for Oblivion and future titles, I'd say the X1800 series is almost the opposite. Now
thats its down in price, it can be a nice upgrade for a somewhat restricted
budget.

SLI is what he wants.

This begs an interesting question...

What res are you running, frankenwookie? And what is you monitor capable of running? I wholeheartedly agree that SLI only really shines at high res.
