I think we've got all we can get out of my kids Dell PIII 550 . I was hoping to low budget upgrade trying to follow this sites artical posted on $500 low budget gaming computer. The Dell currently has an Asylum GeForce FX 5200 256MB PCI graphics which I was hoping to build around to save some money. Is it possible to use this card in combination with AMD 64 3000+, correct motherboard/hardware and 1GB of ram and run the WarHammer Dawn of WAR series, Battlefield 2 and The Total War series types of games? Any advice would be appreciated.

I wouldn't bother with a PCI card, unless you're just going to play Solitaire....Seriously...PCI bus sucks, a RageXL 8MB AGP will likely perform better. :?

The GeF5200 is weak, especially by today's standards.
Even a low-end X1300 will overperform it, and that's a bit weak for those games (even Rome: TW, I can say from experience that it chews a 9600Pro at some points; not to mention BF2).
How's about this: x800 for $800? The old hi-end, still enough power for a couple of years.

IMO: either get a S939 Athlon64 3000+ or a 3200+ for just a little more with 2x512MB DDR RAM (of the same type for dual-channel), or go with an socket AM2 Sempron 3200+ and DDR2-667 memory, which should be a bit cheaper, but not far behind in performance, and leave more room for future upgrades.

i was thinking a bit more down the lines of the bang-for-buck way.

s939 A64 3000+
s939 motherboard, (PCI-E - you gotta keep with the times).
el cheapo DDR400 RAM
GeForce 7300 GS 256MB PCI Express (darn that's cheap!)

The GeForce FX5200 will work in any PC because all motherboards have PCI slots.

Have you considered a motherboard with integrate graphics like the Biostar GeForce 6100-M7 m-ATX?

Not sure how a GeForce 6100 compares to a FX 5200, but hey, it's part of the motherboard already.

I forgot to mention that this all mobos with the Geforce 6100 chipset also comes with a PCI-e x16 slot should you decide to upgrade the video card in the future.

Thanks to all who responded, I am way behind in knowing whats the latest hardware last mother board I had was socket 7 type. I think I am looking for a similar setup as Arson in his post on $500 gaming computer. Maybe a good start would be a 939 board with AGP and PCIex slots to give video card upgrade options if the GeForce 5200 PCI doesn't cut it. So much data on this site, glad I stumbled across it. Thanks again for the help. Sorry if I'm using wrong terms.

if you ask me it's not worth upgrading to AGP + PCI-E board, AGP is dead so i'd forget it. and the miniscule difference in cost is really not worth the hastle of being stuck with nowhere to upgrade to later on!
