what happens if i install 2GB ddr2-800Mhz corsair xms2 ram (dual channel) onto a socket am2 based athlon 64 (say athlon 3200+) motherboard? would the system would fine abet the lower frequency of the ram(would it be restricted to ddr2-667) ? also how do you overclcok a athlon 64 (sorry ive never ocd an athlon) ? ive overclocked my p4 640 to 3.6ghz :) and its relitively easy to do, is it muich differnet with an athlon (hypertransport etc)

Your RAM will work great @ 800mhz(effective) as long as you get an even multi chip such as the 3200+,3800+,4000+,ect. Same goes for dual core so 3200=X2 3800, 3800=X2 4600+, 4000=4800+. Odd multiplier chips run the RAM slightly lower at ~780mhz(effective). Either way your RAM will work great in AM2.

thanks k8man!:D
anyone know how high an overclock can should expect with a athlon 64 3200+ (am2) with a thermaltake bigwater 745 water cooling system? i would like to get a nice overclock of 600mhz or more if this is possible. :) is it? or am i expecting too much? :?

2.7 should be reachable with water.

thanks guys :D

Is it worth getting sli ready memory at 667mhz (cas 4) for £116

or

should i get 800Mhz memory (cas 5) for £152
both are 2gb (2x1gb) corsair xms2 twinx from scan computers http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=22&Category=Memory&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterCategories=302&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterKeywords=&OrderBy=3

is the 667mhz ram overclockable to speeds of 800mhz and beyond? it is cheaper anyway and is the special sli ready memory but how does a difference of 1 in the timeings afect the performance?(obivously the 800mhz has a slightly higer latency and higher price)

i have ddr2 6400(ocz platinum 1gb),cpuz lists the timings at 5-5-5-20'they should read 4-5-4-15,still trying to figure that out.
Seems like CPU-Z isn't quiet keeping up with all the changes anymore. It used to detect processors, and RAM before it was even released....Doesn't seem to be staying ahead of the game now. :?

pc wizard reads at 5-5-5-15,just checked.just restarted cpuz it says the same now/??/? thats curious.
CPU-Z getting tempermental now, isn't it?

I wonder what Memtest would show? Since it's not in Windows, maybe it will show truer timings. :)

think i will shoot for 4-4-4-12 any suggestions tank?
I'd try it at 4-4-4-12, but i have an excessive nature, and i love to push things. Just run Memtest before you try it in Windows. Even if it gets through 1 pass of test 5, then try Windows...That's how i usually do it. OCZ memory generally runs beyond spec with ease. :)

heres the link to the advertised timings.
Nice!!! The fancy XTC modules. I wonder if the honeycomb design actually helps with heat dissapation, or they just use it to look cool(pun intended)?

Myself i think the SLI ready is a gimmick. I would go for the 800's. Both the 667@ CL4, and the 800@ CL5 should perform pretty much evenly. The 800 may have some more overhead in it though, for either higher frequency, or maybe a little tighter timings. GL :)

sure 800mhz ram is better? welll im trying to make a system fo raround £550 but i think ill have to spend £600 or more now, if i get the 800mhz ram i would have to skimp on sum other stuff. heres my conifguration (havent bought it yet):

AMD athlon 64 3200+ (AM2)
2GB corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM
thermaltake armour case
80GB sata2 7220 rpm samsung spinpoint
asus M2N-E motherboard (AM2)
7600gt graphics ?
thermaltake bigwater 745
asus dvd rom
i hope i havent missed anything out

well im sorta stuck, get the 800mhz(cas5) ram or get the 667mhz ram (cas4) if i get the 800mhz i will have to buy a cheaper graphics card. or buy something else cheaper! ive gone over budget
what should i buy?

will the liquid cooling not be as good as the stock cooler? i was thinking that i might be able to get a higher overclock with it and it would also be quieter and look nice in the armouir jr case with the side window....
o well i missed something out

thermaltake tr2 psu 550watt

If gaming is a priority, and you are torn between RAM timings, or a better video card.....get the better video card.

thanks :)
will the bigwater 745 letme overclcok the athlon 64 to a higher speed than the stock cooler or is there a limitation of the design/aretitecture etc why i wouldnt be able to achive a higher overclock? also what would the athlon 3200 overclcoked to 2.7 ghz be like performamce wise (what would it compare up to)

as a matter of fact

3000+ @2400/1.4v/31 c.
ddr2(800) 2.1v 555-15 @ 481
sapphire x1600 pro gddr3 oc'd(stock)575/1380
Have you tried going with a lower multi to see how high your RAM will go. If you could get 9x260 at
1:1, you would have 2340, but 1040 FSB(HTT..whatever).You may reach 1040 if you stay with the 5-5-5-15, and up the RAM voltage a bit.

what does dual channel ram actully do like i know it doubles the bandwidth but does that mean a matched pair of ddr2 ram modules working at say, 400Mhz
400mhz (actual)
800mhz (ddr)
1600mhz dual channel
but if dual channel actully doubles the bandwidith then wouldnt it be:
ddr2 1600mhz effective?
??????? ??????? i am confused!

dual channel you mean?
You said that you're running at 2400 with a multiplier of 9. That means an FSB of 266/267. You also said your RAM is running at 481, which is 240MHzx2. So that means that your RAM is running asynchronously(different speed than FSB). 1:1(synchronous) would have your RAM running at 266/267 or DDR532/534.

Basically, nothing... DDR2-800 will work fine, but you will not get any noticable improvement over a socket 939 running DDR-400 memory. :)
Every review I have seen uses 2T cmd rate which absolutely kills K8 performance. I know I wont be upgrading to DDR2 of 2t is the only way to fly. DDR3 will be here before we know it anyway so DDR2 will be more or less a bastard child of Intel that AMD was forced to enter into market with to compete price-wise.

too true jack, and in some cases a small percentage less performance.

Well to be fair, you would have noticed a significant drop in performance when Prescott was released compared to the Northwood when Netburst was first introduced :)I was using a socket 775 Prescott P4 with DDR400. The RAM, which I'm still using, is some no-name crap; it came with my computer when it was an HP. Guess where that Prescott is right now?
