Hi,
After positioning the taskbar on the top edge of the screen, if I maximize a
window, the title bar gets hidden under the taskbar leaving an empty space
on the bottom part of the screen, where the taskbar used to be and of the
same size as the taskbar.
How can the new desktop area be defined?
Shouldn't it be automatically defined?

With a misbehaving window open, right click the taskbar and select Cascade.
Then try Maximize. This exercise should reset any remembered window
positions and recalculate new ones based on the taskbar's new location.

If however, you still run into trouble with a program, contact tech support
for that program to see if they have a workaround. It's possible that their
app doesn't check for taskbar location and it is assuming the taskbar is in
the default bottom position.

Many windows misbehaving, among them Notepad, Word, Excel and several
non-Microsoft programs. So I don't know who I should contact.

After getting the windows into position, use File> Close to close the
window. You could try pressing Ctrl and clicking the X too. These are other
steps that can help to bring a window back under control.
