A few days ago I saw a Sapphire X1800XT on newegg for $220. I thought this was the perfect price for me. I have run into a problem though. The X1800XT requires two open slots in the case. I have a uBTX case and there is not a slot above the PCIe x16 slot, and there for the card will not fit.

I can mod the card by adding a Accelero X2 and cutting off the vents that would use the second slot in the case, or can can spend even more money. The Accelero X2 costs about $22, bringing the price of the GPU upgrade to $242.

This is what I am looking at.

Sapphire X1800XT 625/1500MHz 16pipes $242(w/mod)

Sapphire X1900GT 575/1200 12(36) $285

Diamond X1900GT 575/1200 12(36) $270

XFX 7900GTEX 520/1500 24 $265

eVGA 7900GTKO 520/1500 24 $245

eVGA 7900GTCO 500/1500 24 $255

I would like to stay with ATI, I currently have a X1600 Pro OC 557/446, just because I am lazy and do not want to change the drivers. $270 is a lot of money to spend, especialy with the DX10 cards coming out sometime soon. Then again I wnat to wait to see what the requiremnts are for Spore before I shell out the big bucks for a DX10 card, and Spore is not due out until next fall. I realy need something that can kick the crap out of Oblivion and FEAR.

1. Forget the X1900 GT, they're slower than both the X1800 XT and 7900 GT.

2. If oblivion's your game, get the X1800 XT. It performs very similarly to the 7900 GT in almost everything, but in shader heavy stuff - especially oblivion - it seems to excel past the 7900 GT.

3. The 7900 GTs the best option if you're big into overclocking though.

The heatsink is on the underside of the Card. You need an empty slot below the PCI-e 16X slot, not above it.

I would love to get the X1800XT. I have 2 ATI cards and 1 Nvidia. Really think the ATI ones look better. Also AA and HDR at the same time is an ATI only that rocks.

I have a uBTX case. The mobo is on the left side of the case not the right like in a ATX. There for the the cooler and heat sink face up. It would be the same as having the PCIe x16 slot as the bottom most slot on a ATX case.

I am impartial to Nvidia (they ROCK!!!), and would go for the 7900 GT CO (lIfetime Warranty), but the X1800 XT has been performing better on Oblivion (vertex Shaders), and the 7900 GT has some artificing problems...

I'm currently building my own rig - I empathize with you - the same GPU problem :)

X1800 XT VS 7900 GT

The ATI is cheaper by 20-30 dollars on Newegg, so, flip a coin...

I would use the 1800 xt. AA and HRD at the same time, better speed, and so on. Later on, you might think about a bigger case and motherboard to fit. It makes upgrades so much easier.

My bad; stinks for you. I prefer 2 slot cooling on high end cards.

I've seen the x1900xt around $300 on newegg. Would that sway anyone's decision? Would the little extra oomph be worth it over the x1800xt?

of course... that card plays in the same court as the xtx and the 7900gtx. can beat the gtx on a very few marks, but mostly just stays close to them, but above teh 7900gt.

that is naturally if one could afford the extra scratch... even 30 or 40 bucks can be alot sometimes. ;)

Other than Oblivion, are there any other games where ATI will outshine nVidia?

That's not too far off-topic, is it?

...any game that you want to look better.

simply put, ati has a better visual quality. The reason ppl say that oblivion is better on ati is b/c of the hdr+aa option. But even w/o that, ALL games can benefit from ati's high-quality AF and AA options. There is less texture crawl, better AA algorithms and better color saturation on ATI.

raw performance-wise Nv may take many of the benchies by a few % points, but if you see the game in action ati simply looks better. [H] has done a good job of evangelising this point. Check out some reviews there. Firingsquad is also good for that.

Excellent information. Thank you.

Personally I Love My Highly Overclocked 7800GT (Complete System Specs Below), And On My Monitor (Due To Its Ultra-Tight Dot Pitch) AA And AF Isnt A Super Important Thing To Me Above 4xAA And 16xAF (I Only Use 8xAA When Running A Game Below My Monitors Native Res) And I Can Bring 70+ FPS In F.E.A.R At Those Settings (Besides The Eyes Cant Relly Tell The Differance Between 40FPS And 100FPS Anywayse, As Long As The Game Is Smooth And Looks Good Its Fine By Me
June 19, 2006 11:26:36 PM

At stockspeeds, the 7900 GT and X1800 XT will trade blows as far as raw framerates.

Hey, dumbass, you forgot the X1900GT can recive a simple BIOS flash to upgrade to a X1900XT, PWNS the opponets.

Think before you post fuckbag.

Think before you post ******. Uhh dude it needs more than that maybe an overclock of 125 mhz on the core and 250 on the ram and some better cooling. Btw albert dont insult cleeve he's a forum vet he deserves respect.
June 20, 2006 12:04:54 AM

wasnt someone on teh forums just able to flash a x1900Gt to a x1900Xt? if thats true i would probably go for that. Peace.
June 20, 2006 1:11:50 AM

Well, glad you saw the title to my thread, I wasn't the one who flashed it, tofu was, but since I read the articles and some of the troubles I have modded some of the X1900Xt and X1900GT BIOS, soon I'll have a flash for the X1900GT with the XT core.
June 20, 2006 2:46:09 AM

Flash the X1900GT? :o

We need to keep you around for simple comic relief

I'm afraid its more complex and physically impossible....but whatever you say bud.
June 20, 2006 2:47:55 AM

Why not get serious and just step up to a 1900 XTX ? There's no challenge to the king of the hill, at least until the next series of cards come out.

LOL. I guess I'm an nvidiot.

Hey, my Geforce4 MX 440 is the best video card in the world because I can liquid-nitrogen cool it and run it at 4000 Mhz! So that makes it better than the X1900 GT, because of what this one card can do when modified!

Buffoon. What you can flash to might be relevant for hardcore modders - when it's proven - but:

1) alot of people don't mod their cards, and

2) Smarten up... you could have made the point pleasantly, instead you were an ass about it. If you come in here shooting your mouth off like a fanboy idiot we will all destroy you.

No mod is proven, there's always a dud somewhere
But the fact is, unless you have your own silicon fab and personally have designs from ATI @ TSMC, your not modding an X1900GT into a damn thing.

He didnt make any logical point, so basically he was an ass about essentially nothing. So destory him all you want on the grounds of ignorance.

If you want to run Oblivion with the best possible graphics on an ATI card, you'll need to set everything to maximum in the game settings and use HDR + 6x quality adaptive anti-aliasing + 16x anisotropic filtering. With Radeon 1800XT 512mb you'll get 10-15 FPS in outdoor environments on those settings, Radeon 1900XTX should do a bit better (maybe 15-25 fps). I got this information from the following article: http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=40

The interesting thing is that 2x and 4x AA seem to be quite similar, while 6x AA is noticeably better in Oblivion. You can notice this in the screenshots provided with the article.

True enough, but you see what I'm getting at though... if there is a reasonable chance that a mod is successful, proven by multiple successes, then it can be relevant to a modder who is purchasing a card.

But certainly, we can agree on this at least: Fat Albert is an ass.

Cleeve/Raven, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that flash depend on which core your X1900GT has? As in R580"XL" or R580"PRO"? Hopefully Fat Albert has the wrong one. 8)
June 20, 2006 6:14:02 PM

Not on these GPU's. Shaders and pipes are laser cut, then voltage regulation is all different then mofsets as well....really a bunch of stuff.
