I have a 40 gig HD where I keep about 4 years worth of family photos. Yesterday, I accidentally deleted the partition on it. I didn't reformat it or try to install OS or anything, I just deleted the partition. Now the computer wont access the drive.

Please tell me my pictures are still there and how I can get them back up.

I have used software called Active File Recovery to recover data on a few drives when their file system got messed up. Here is a link to the software on download.com. It has a free trial version that lets you scan the drive to see what it finds. If it is able to recover the information, you may have to shell out the $30 for the full version, but that is a small price to pay for data recovery like that.

Give TestDisk a whirl. It's lean, opensource, and has saved a few of my friends' hard disks before.

Also, as a personal note, this should serve as a warning: for important data that you don't want to lose, back it up at least once. Data loss and/or corruption will happen again, it is inevitable.

Edit: TestDisk is included on the Ultimate Boot CD under Hard Disk Tools (will have to scroll through a few screens of other tools). This is a great CD to have in any recovery situation. Just FYI.

I used a partition recovery program before. It worked fine for me. I hope it can help you. It named "Partition Table Doctor". You can download it from the website http://www.ptdd.com and use it to recover the partition. Also, you can use file recovery program to recover your pictures. Maybe "Data Recovery Wizard" can help you. See http://www.easeus.com.
