Hey guys, after much posting at TES Forums i figured id come here for some advice.

Im looking to get a new (High end) PC in the next 2 months, ive selected all my parts except my CPU. I need some opinions here. The cheap and very easily overclockable Pentium D 805, or the more expensive better backed 3800+ X2.

Thanks to anyone that helps ^_^

EDIT: Im an aussie, our prices are much different (if it counts)

Go with an 805D on a Conroe-compatible board. When the 805D gets too slow, you are sure you can upgrade to the latest and greatest Intel has to offer (i.e. Conroe/Core 2 Duo). The money you save with the 805D now, can go towards a Conroe later.

AMD is good but with all these Conroe benchmarks coming out (even with those who rubbish it... still), it's clear this is going to destroy anything in its wake. If you must go AMD, get AM2 so you are that little bit more future-proofed.

You are looking for a 945G/P, 955X, 975X chipset and similar ATI and Nvidia chipsets such as NForce 4 or 5 and ATI Xpress 200 or 3200 or whatever. They have to be socket 775. Also, make sure to check on the box for dual-core support.

The Core-compatible chipsets are: 946G/P, 975X, 965X.

Lets keep this civil mate. I dont google things like that because i KNOW where the real Pro's are found. Google can sometimes be not so pro... *shakes head*

EDIT: After taking a look at the site im buying from they only have 2 975X boards and they are triple the price of the A8N5-X i was going with for my 3800+ X2 system =T

EDIT 2 : I put this Pentium D 805 System together, take a look. Feedback appreciated. SYSTEM

You'd be much better off getting a Pentium D920/930. They have many advantages over the D805 for a few dollars more. The D920/930 are also a fistful of dollars cheaper than the x2 3800+. In US dollars 920 can be had for $170, the 930 for around $190, whereas the x2 3800+ costs $300.

So you have the good, the bad and the ugly. Good = D920/930. (Cheap, 65nm, very good o/c) Bad = D805 (90nm, big heat when overclocking. I know, i've got one), Ugly = x2 3800+ (unnattractive pricing).

PS. Notice the Clint Eastwood Themed post?

Sorry buddy, 946 only. The 945 only works with the D 805.
There are Core Duo motherboars with i945 that are compatible with Core 2 Duo. All chipset from 865 are conroe compatible but not all motherboards. Check it there are VRM and BIOS incompatibilities with some boards and conroe.

Get one Pentium D 950 I don't know in Aus but in Europe are cheaper and better performer than the X2.

Or get the X2 and overclock it, don't get the 805: is cheap, hot and the only way to get performance its overclocking it like mad.
