OK, i am building a new computer, right now i've got the X850XT PE and what's holding me back from getting the other parts is the cpu :S

Ive researched both cpus and the Pentium D is a good overclocker. I've bought the AMD AM2 3800+ because i've found out that amd cpus are better for gaming . i can refund it within 7 days if i dont open the box to change with pentium d.

so im not sure if i want to keep this or get the pentium D 805 and overclock it

also can the pentium d be oced with stock cooling?? im pretty sure the 3800+ can be oced to around 2.8ghz with stock cooling and reach a high of 38 degrees celcuis

another thing is that if i get the am2, later on when amd reduces their prices i can get the x2 3800+

i'll be using the cpu for mostly gaming :S

so which one am i better off buying?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, I asked myself the exact same question and I finally bought a 3800+ (that I received this morning). Here's why:

- Conroes will be great, as they'll offer ~10% performance boost on same clock speed basis. But we don't really know how the first RETAIL conroes will overclock, so I assume AMD still keeps an advantage here after overclocking.

- AMD boards are normally easier to overclock. Coupled with good memory like the Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800C4, you can normally achieve ~DDR2-1000 results with a faster memory controler and bus.

- It's tough to find a good board that supports Conroe. The NForce platform is way more mature and complete than the 965, and 975 support is spotty at best. Only the Intel board rev 304 has been confirmed to support Conroe, and it's expensive, hard to get and not the best overclocker.

- D805 overclocked systems consume twice the electricity of an overclocked 3800+, and they get really really hot. Summer is here, so high heat production is out.

- I believe the performance and price war that's coming will likely continue well into next year, and new processors will be cheap and powerful, and it's hard to know who will be the leader 1 year from now when you'll want to upgrade your CPU.

But I must admit it's the first time in 10 years I had to think this hard about a setup.

Just my $0.02

imo, C2D offers a significantly over 20%+ clock for clock...
Remember, the benchies are showing a stock 2.66GHz C2D beating an FX-62 at 2.8GHz at about a 20% advantage...
If you increase the speed of the C2D another 140MHz, then that 20% lead grows...

Im down with the cheap 3800+ in AM2 wtih DDR2-800 low latency. Then your ready for the 65nm X2 when it arrives.
If you overclock the 805 dont expect 4ghz and dont forget you will need a $50 aftermarket fan minimum to reach 3.6ghz, even then you'll be lucky and even then the 3800+ will probably outgame it. (dont quote me on that)
If you can find a board that will for sure support cornrow, then the 805 might be a decent option.

Well you be foolish not to future proof yourself for c2d. If there ever was a time to move to Intel its now.
