I'm so excited for Conroe!! Finally to have an Intel processor in my system that will stop bottlenecking my video cards (to a point)! Needless to say I will be upgrading on launch day. I was just so suprised that I was able to convince my wife.

Basically what I'm wondering is which Conroe will you be buying or will you hold on to your 939, or maybe wait for quad core?

Use the poll.

I am anxiously awaiting Dec for me to get the E6800 for $530 or even less!
The thought of owning more performance than a FX-62 for half the price, plus having more overclocking headroom than AMD ever had... puts a sly grin on my face...

Well i think im going for a E6600 at the end of the year. Hoping it falls within the right cost bracket for me. Well that and a new motherboard im going to be needing as well.

and DDR2 memory... which is the same as if you did go for AM2... minus the performance and low cost, but with more heat!

E6700 For me! I really like the possibility of going over 3GHz on my liquid cooling setup. :D

t-break previewed the Core 2 Duo and this is what they said about the temperatures:

Quote:
According to the motherboard we tested this CPU on, the BIOS was reporting temperatures of under 30 degrees C on idle and a little less than 40 under load- again, mighty impressive.

4GHz with WC. I bet on my ass

The question is, does anyone really want ass? Bet the CPU and you're on 8)

I'm getting the X6800, and if i can hold out i'd get the X6900.
June 21, 2006 7:30:07 PM

I'm getting a E6600 with Air cooling and will upgrade to water if i need an extra oomph to make myself feel better when the price drops or faster speed grades come out.

Ha ha!!! I convinced my wife by telling her I am concerned about our current system running all the time...I can't get it to standby and it is a Dell Poweredge so it is a server (being used as a desktop PC) with one fan that is very loud...long story, though.

Anyway I had to tell my wife that I will start with barebones and upgrade over a couple of months, and that a new computer will be my birthday present this year.

The E6600 certainly seems to be the most popular. :p
June 21, 2006 7:54:51 PM

Ill be getting Merom, model... eh... whatever model Dell is going to put inside their Inspiron XPS.
June 21, 2006 8:08:29 PM

not a fan boy but will stick with current set up as I have already built my computer for the year. will check things out next year and make a choice at that time. My gut tells me AMD will be behind the 8 ball but, I could be wrong. We'll see, in the mean time I will be getting a few laughs from some ( not all) of the dumbasses who post on this forum...look forward to reading your posts..
June 21, 2006 8:25:09 PM

how much will the E6600 be?
June 21, 2006 8:49:21 PM

6700 baby...I didn't think the price was THAT much over the 2.4Ghz model (I believe, but am too lazy to look up Tom's article on it) Water cool this sucker, and you def. should be able to get it over 4 Ghz (if you didn't see, someone oc'ed one to 4Ghz just on air cooling). I'm counting the days till July 23rd

is it just you or is AMD somehow putting you up to this? You sound like a broken record. Whre was your criticality when Intel was melting plastic cases..... wait they still are.

What a dink!

Not his anyway...

I'll be in the queue for a 6600 most likely. Wouldn't want my AMD boxes to get too jealous.
June 21, 2006 10:06:52 PM

I'll be keeping my 939 AMD 3700+ for now, though I must admit the temptation to go Conroe is there. I'll probably buy a computer in three years, when DDR4 is comming out, there are Octo-core cpus, PCI Express 100x, and 16 way SLI/Crossfire.
June 21, 2006 10:27:13 PM

6600 or 6700 depends on how much there taxing when vista comes up when i finally upgrade my computer :)
June 21, 2006 10:57:21 PM

E6600 for me I wan't conroe's babys  .
June 21, 2006 10:59:36 PM

im going to prolly buy the AMD X2 4600+ when it drops down to the $300 - $325 range and wait for the conroe to be revised once or twise. My system will be the one in the tag once i get it.

I need new everything. So I am also hoping to wait for quad core and a good Dx10 card. About Feb-March 2007..
June 21, 2006 11:36:54 PM

personally im gonna stick with my modest 3500+ and 6800GT but will be looking to upgrade the whole system next year, any release date for crysis yet as i dont really see that much of a need for upgrades atm altho may change my mind when oblivion arrivers tomorrow. i can see a few fundemental gaming releases along the lines that Doom 3 and HL2 where being timed shortly after the Vista release so will upgrade then hmmm may go quad everything quad SLI, core and raid 0 should be fast :-) call it the quad box

edit: im very interested as to who will triumph in the upcoming physics war Msoft w/DirectX 11, ageia, or havok id personally like to see ageia win but whatever happens its all good for us at the end of the day
June 21, 2006 11:51:08 PM

I expect Crysis and other apps will FINALLY need a "quad box" by March. Maybe I am wrong, but that is also when I plan to get new everything.
About physics. I just hope old bugs are removed no matter what standard is used. This reminds me of the early 3D cards. The first 3D cards where SLOWER than software rendering engines on glQuake 1. It wasn't until 3DFX that you can get full color, VGA res, and 30+ fps. So I expect in a year or two physics solutions will run a lot smoother and faster.
June 23, 2006 2:45:54 AM

I want to pre order mine now, but I have to wait for my check to clear :( .
June 23, 2006 2:49:44 AM

staying with 939 cause i don't have the cash to upgrade every time a better proc comes out... i would get one if i could :-p
June 23, 2006 3:03:39 AM

Whichever is the cheapest so I can mail one to MMM, 9nm and BM.
June 23, 2006 3:20:57 AM

You couldn't be any more happy to see them leave, I spose they were pretty harsh to you. Was there any specific reason they got kicked or was it for just being a holes

If I manage to piss you off with amd fanboyism, will you send me one, too?

Anyway:
since most games are gpu-limited, and the conroe looks like it is fairly powerful, I think I'll just go with the E6300 and spend what I'd save on a better graphics card. And then do some oc 8)
June 23, 2006 8:23:48 PM

ok i have a thread for this question, but i really need to know. Sorry for double post.

Which one is better and Whyyyy, Conroe with 2MB Cache or with 4MB Cache?
June 23, 2006 8:30:14 PM

Like many I'll be going for the E6600, and am excited at the OC potential.

The stock performance seems to be so good though, and so cool that I'm quite interested in getting my new PC as quiet as possible on air cooling. I saw a picture of 2 Conroe systems being passively cooled, and powered from just one PSU - link
