hello everybody
I have a few (well, actually thousands) questions
please give me a little brake since I'm very new to all this stuff
what is squawk and what do you do with it when given by ATC?
what's the difference between course and heading?
I know what happens when I fly on AP and change the heading but
nothing happens when I change the course

thanks
Mark

Squawk is when atc request you to identify your aircraft to them. In FS9 you
simply acknolowledge their squawk request and the sim does everything for
you. If you want to do it manually, ATC will tell you as an example to
Squawk 2432. You then set this number up on your IFF transponder and contact
ATC to tell them you have done it and they should then confirm that they
have you on radar.

I might get slapped here, but my understanding is that course is the
direction of flight and heading is where the aircraft is actually pointed.
In zero wind conditions both will be the same, but if you have side winds
the two will be different. Others might be able to provide a better
definition to this.

I use the course 'bug' on the dials to remind me where the next turn is. I
also use it during the landing phase of the flight and tend to set it to the
direction of the runway I am landing on as it provides a nice visual cue as
to your orientation to the runway. Others might use this in a different
way....

Hope this helps
RobP

Squawk code is an identification code you dial into your transponder. The
transponder is used by ATC to identify your aircraft with their radar. In
the sim, when you aknowledge the code it is automatically changed for you
in the transponder.

The AP can use radio beacons on the ground called VOR's to navigate, the
course setting on the panel works with the VOR's to steer you in your
desired direction. There is info about VOR's in the Learning Center and
flying lessons that come with the sim so I won't go into detail about it and
strongly suggest you go through all the lessons that came with the sim.

But here's one quick example of how a VOR course is followed. Say you are
South East of the San Francisco VOR and you want to fly on a course directly
East bound from San Francisco. You would set your course to 90 degrees and
tune in the San Francisco VOR frequency in your VOR1 radio receiver, then
fly Northbound to intercept the Eastbound course from the VOR. The VOR
needle will tell you when you are exactly on the 90 degree course from the
VOR, you turn East and then the needle will tell you if you drift left or
right off course.
