Alright so I just connected all of my components (hard-drive,fans,cd rom drives) to various power cords hooked to my power supply. My question is does it matter which power cords I connect them to or is it cool to just hook up all components to the generic power cords. I have a Antec TP-II 550W PS.

Do you mean the 4 pin molex and flat s-ata power connectors? If so you don't need to choose particular ones, just connect them as they make sense.

hmm..maybe this will help

and power cords only go in one way. if it doesnt go in easyily then its wrong.

I hope none of your friends ask you for help with their computer....for their sake. :?

Am I correct in assuming that you mean the cord that runs from the wall to the power supply?

the connectors are generally fool-proof (unless you force them)....so it`s easy to fit each and everyone of them in their place.....

read the mobo manual if you are confused...the other components (hdd, optical drives) use 4 pin molex connectors ...

good luck

Wow... people have to ask to figure out how to plug stuff in O.o... I remember my first build... It was like a jigsaw puzzle with 4 pieces the size of a sheet of paper... pretty much stupid proof... then again maybe I give stupid people to much credit :p

Umm... GL not frying your mobo dude

Just be sure that you don't hook up both legacy and SATA power connectors to your hard drives at the same time!! :!:  :!:

why?
June 27, 2006 3:27:37 AM

Because it can damage or destroy the drive. Just connect the data cable and one power cable, not both power cables.

if you connect both power connectors, sata and molex you`ll gonna turn your drive into a christmas tree....bum, blow.....  :?

Wow.... you said that alot nicer than I would have.

I think he was really not sure which ones to connect.

Sav,

All the connectors are KEYED. They will typically (as stated above) only fit one way/one type. This was done on purpose to keep people from frying their mobo.

However, There are two power connector capabilites for some SATA hard drives. Please only hook 1 up (either one will work).

Also, after getting everything up and running, do some cable management. This is the ART of hiding cables from site/airflow. This allows the case to breathe better. Do not hide them behind HOT items as this is not normally a good thing to do. ;)

Go to google images and look up some pics for pc cable management. You should find something.

Also, given this is your first build it might help to only put in the essentials first and leave off the EXTRAs. Build a barebones machine then add things like your sound card, extra hardrive, extra optical drives and so on. Get it up and running on the minimum first then continue from there. I will take a little longer this way but it will be much better.
