So, I'm landing the DC3 and very happy that I didn't crash it. :-)
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y [...] nding1.jpg

As the tail of the plane settles to the ground, my view out the front
windshield gets higher and higher...and then *too* high and I get a CRASH
message! When I switch to spot view I see that the back half of the plane
is underground...instant replay shows that instead of landing on the ground,
the tailwheel passed through the runway causing the crash.

Luckily I'd saved the flight just before landing (I need the practice :-),
and this time everything worked normally. So, it's a mystery as to why this
happened.

I was using the Golden Wings 3 mod, if that matters.

I don't know, but you may be so used to landing the modern way, on two
wheels and a nose wheel, that you did not settle into the old 'three point
landing' which the tail draggers use? Thus, the tail came down too suddenly
from a great height?

maybe the tail-wheel was let down a bit too rapidly and broke. It's an
exaggeration when the whole plane `goes under'. Is it the default DC3?
Check in the Aircraft.cfg file (in DC3 folder) for the Tail Wheel in
[Contact_Points] section. See what the Damage Threshold is
(fourth parameter from left).

//4 Impact Damage Threshold (Feet Per Minute)

-Gregory

p.s. or add index into the [Contact_Points] section for reference

Just noticed above line.. it's possible to find each and every change
to AIR and CFG file. It answers `what exactly does GW3 modify'.

FWIW.. FO Deukevich (5y/o nephew) landed the Jet last weekend and
banged the left wing on the ground. About 1/3 of the wing disappeared
below grade. There was no crash. In this case.. I doubt anyone could
get away with `whapping' the wing on the grass like that!! So we're
looking at the SCRAPE damage thresholds now.

How'd anyone know this?? since we never crash.. or even test-crash!!

Damn you CRaSH.. you snuck in there before I could. :-)

Oh well I'll go anyway:

1) Lawn Dart would be so jealous!

2) That's a landing technique known as a "reverse Lawn Dart".

HA! I had the same thing happen in the old Trimotor. It settled on the
tail wheel and that felt normal but the I started going to zenith in the
cockpit! WQeird feel.

Thanks for the replies, all. In retrospect, you're right and I probably let
the tailwheel down too hard. I did a "wheel landing" and tried to keep the
tail up off of the ground as long as possible, but that's not the right way
to do it (because it eventually slams down). I guess I was able to get away
with that behavior in the default Piper Cub, but the default DC3 is a bigger
plane!
