So I have a new job now and I make good money. I am thinking that I will have a few extra hundred every month to put away towards a new box. So I am wondering if I should buy parts as I have the cash, or save it all until I have over $2000 and just get the best I can.

I would save the money first, then buy the parts. You could buy the fastest RAM now...Say PC6400 @ 3-3-3-8, then by the time you're ready to build they might have PC8500 @ 3-3-3-8(MAYBE). You get the idea though. Video cards are changing rapidly, and what's top-of-the-line now, may be outdated in a matter of months.

Save up until you have $1500-2000 and then buy everything at once. Do NOT piece meal your rig as if something is FUBAR'ed, then it is out of the 30 day return or whatever.

$150 Conroe or AM2 Mobo
$200 AM2 chip (by end of July)
$250 1 GFX Card
$100 SB X-fi card
$250 for any decent DDR2-800 RAM
$250 for a good case and PSU
$25 DVD burner
$200 for HDDs

1425 total.

Add in watercooling, an LCD, gaming keyboard and mouse and it'll be around 2000 total. Obviously, it's a rough estimation, but there's a rig.
