Woodcrest officially fragged: performance 10-20% slower than Opteron

Performance, Price/Performance, Performance/watt

In March, I projected that Woodcrest should be 10-20% slower than Opteron in server performance. Now GamePC has done some Apache web server* benchmark for Woodcrest 5140, and Woodcrest is a dog. The Woodcrest 5140 is 14% slower than Opteron 280. In fact, Woodcrest 5140 is slightly slower than Opteron 270 (2GHZ).

The Woodcrest 5140 is to be priced at $470. Opteron 270 is available for $441.

The key here is 64 bit server performance. Woodcrest is simply no match to Opteron. Now, you understand why Intel had to pre-arrange benchmarks for people to push buttons.

In 64 bit file compression/decompression tests under Linux, a 2.6GHZ Woodcrest is 40% slower than a 2.4GHZ Opteron. In 64 bit ScienceMark MolDyn test, the Opteron 275 (2.2GHZ) is 31% faster than Woodcrest Xeon 5140.

As for power consumption, Woodcrest is getting close to socket 940 Opteron levels. The Woodcrest 5140 system consumes 23 watts more than the Opteron 270. I noticed that the test systems only had 2GB of RAM, so the extra power introduced by FB-DIMMs was small. In a fully loaded system, the Woodcrest system will definitely consume more power.

*Apache runs 61% of world's web sites (Microsoft IIS runs 29%).

You forgot to add: This has been a paid political announcement.
I'm Mr. anti-Intel and I approve of this commercial.

Id have to agree, if he said something like lets discuss or talk about it then id have to say differently. To just come here and say "INTEL IS BEAT!" and not say anything but that makes it pretty clear.

no one should ever take what you say seriously, including this. everyone who knows who you are knows you hate intel and will twist any fact to make sure AMD looks better.

anand runs some benchmarks, intel comes out on top, and you do everything you can try try and make anand look unreliable and their results incorrect. now, GamePC runs some benchmarks, AMD comes out on top, and suprise suprise, all is right and these benchmarks are to hold true.

I also enjoy how you repeatedly quote your OWN terribly unreliable blog as proof of what you say.

I'm going to wait until tomorrow when the launch is official and valid reviewers give thier opinion. I bet woodcrest will get beat significantly in 4-way plus, but that's about it.

Opteron beats Woodcrest?
If Sharikou says it, it must be true.

You also said here that removing the heatsink from a P4 would cause it to explode:
The CPU can explode when overheated, such explosion can cause secondary explosions..
You even cited this highly scientific and professional video as proof. In the wake of your superior evidence, no one can dispute your claims.

I suppose you forgot to read this , huh??

That article doesn't say much at all...

"Gomberg used a single software for his benchmarks - Sungard AAA"

"...the Opteron servers did not use their power management feature and ran in a considerably smaller form factor, which required additional fans that added to the power consumption."

You know, your commentary is completely pointless. The 5140 almost always leads its direct competition the Opteron 270 in every benchmarks except the Apache scores that you zero in to blindly condem Woodcrest with. Even then, the results are close and don't detract from Woodcrests overall great performance.

You can complain and whine all you want, but Woodcrest is hardly "fragged". In fact, I'm fairly sure you'll see it pulling ahead performance wise once Socket F is released. Why? It's simply for the same reasons you've been whining about for the FX62. AMD needs DDR2 800 with ultra low latencies to achieve best performance. Well guess what, Socket F will be using Registered DDR2 667 memory likely with nice 5-5-5 timings, which will effectively cripple the Opterons.

Thankfully, companies don't seem to be taking your word that Woodcrest is "fragged". Google for one has decided to drop AMD like a bad habit. I guess AMD should be thankful that some of their supply crunch is alleviated.

I would just let them bash the moron poster and not let yourself get too involved.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but in this case The Inquirer was one the first people to break the AMD-Google deal so you'd think they'd know what they're talking about when to change their mind.

Can I ask a serious question, why do you do these crappy drive by posts? To get more hits on your lame ass bog? Why don't you have a site instead of a lame bog? And why don't you stay to do defend your claims?

I like your shakira, you are the best, just like AMD. Even my Duron 750MHz is faster than two Woodcrest 5140. Keep the good work, and keep us informed whenever you find more clues about the big Intel lies!
