ok finally growing sick of moving around my desktop and it's constant dying on me. I am looking into buying a Laptop. I am Visual and Game Programming major, so I am planning getting a system I just don't know where to start looking to understand what kind of laptop spu would be good.
it'll run games, and lemme do some modelling and watch movies. I have a desktop with an Geforce FX 5900 agp card and I like the performance that gives me.

Its only important that you have a Core Duo, nice RAM and a big screen; you dont need a graphics card for programming (obviously).
But dont buy some cheap no-name, you will regret it

It's Dual Core Dumba$$. Core Duo(don't be so funking bias) and you do need a Graphic card. or atleast take a VGA Card. Turion Is about as good as Single core Can Get. So having a Single core Turion is about the same thing as a mid level or a mid-high level Dual Core
