Videos/DVDs of 'cockpit action' ?

Now that passengers can no longer get into the cockpit to observe
things, does anyone know of any DVDs/videos which follow the 'action'
in the cockpit from pre-flight checks to landing (with perhaps some of
the actual flight on AP cut - would make for a long film otherwise)?

Probably no such thing exists, but to be able to watch in detail what
goes on in the cockpit of a 777, for instance, would be great. I've
searched one or two specialised websites, but haven't found anything
like what I am looking for - just lots of external clips of jets
taking off....

That was quick! The sites look great - I'll see what I can find there.
Thanks!

Yep, just like those. I am drooling all over my keyboard. (my son says
'Get a life' - but, whatever!!).

I am in the UK, but could order from the States, no problem. Also
found a UK site, although the selection is smaller. I shall be
ordering something from somewhere later today , that's for sure!

Try Key Publishing who produce Airliner World here in the UK. They advertise
lots of such videos for sale. :0))

I'll try those too, thanks. The Polar 747 DVD will be great for
starters, but I think I've found a rich new source for Christmas &
birthday present ideas when people ask what I would like, especially
now I can find a number of the DVDs at suppliers here in the UK!

You might also take a look at www.elementbuch.de They offer a huge selection of cockpit-DVDs (WorldAirRoutes,
Cockpitflight, ITVV), and are shipping from the EU (might speed things up a little - no customs!)

Are all cockpits closed to passengers since 9/11. I have seen quite a few
videos on www.flightlevel350.com from the flightdeck posted well after 2001.
Considering they thank the pilots for allowing access I presume they are
members of the public.

AFAIK,

In the USA, in-flight access to the flight deck has been off limits since
well before 9/11.

But, since 9/11, Cockpit doors have been "strengthend" and/or "armored" and
new procedures have been implemented that place bodies (cabin crew) between
the public and the flight deck whenever the door is opened in flight.

A little over 2 years ago I took my son, he was 10 at the time, to
Washington, D.C. and asked if he could take a peak into the 777 we were
flying. We got a very polite yes, and the pilot gave him a trading card for
the plane and signed it. Or the card may have come from the Airbus on one
leg. But on each flight we were able to poke our heads into the cockpit with
the pilot's permission when we were on the ground. He even pointed many
things out to him about the operation of the AC. I didn't even ask if it was
possible in flight, I knew the answer to that.

I tried very hard not to ask if I could take it out for a spin around the
block, I failed. He said no. Maybe I shouldn't have said "spin"???

Even us big "kids" get the occasional Walter Mitty moment:

I flew on an America West 757 a few weeks ago and during preflight, the
Captain came wandering back through the cabin and happened to notice my AOPA
hat.

After a little chit chat about my personal flying, he invited me up to the
flight deck and offered me the left seat where I was able to have a nice 20
minute confab with he and the First Officer who was just finishing up data
entry into the FMS.

Both of them strongly suggested I pursue an Instrument Rating because
(quoting the First Officer) during Private Pilot training, "with the minimal
hoodwork, they teach you just enough to get yourself killed..."

The other thing I found fascinating is that they can actually get a number
displayed on the FMS that is actually quantifies the cost of the flight. In
fact, the heading above the number on the display actually says COST.
Factors such as capacity, weather, weight, flight level, planned fuel burn
and some other stuff get crunched and up pops a number that directly relates
to how efficient the flight is (or is not...)

IIRC, they mentioned that they like to see a number around 30 but on this
particular flight, the spoilers were inop, so we were limited to only FL290
and this raised the Cost Number to 70. Really, I'm not kidding...

Once we got down to about 5 minutes to pushback, I thanked them and headed
back to my seat. There were some envious stares from some of the other
pax...hehehe
