Old issue here --->http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?nam...

New issue:

Again the setup:

Asus A8N-SLI Premium
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail
2GB Corsair Low Latency RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7900GT 256
Dual WD SATA HDD NOT in RAID
Single DVD-RW with Lightscribe and floppy drive
Antec Tru-Power II 550W PS

I replaced the old Rosewill with the antec and I still get the hard drive clicking. At this point is it now the motherboard? I am out of ideas. I have this nice $2K paperweight, and no paitence anymore. Ideas? Thoughts?

harddrive clicking as in literally making noise?
June 26, 2006 10:53:40 PM

99% when a drive fails, it clicks.

Also if they are SATA disks do not connect the SATA Power cable and the molex cable your are getting 12v and 5v thru both i don't think that is good for the drive.

Does your MB and or disks support SMART? if so enable it to get additional diagnositcs.

have you tried your disks on another computer. have you tried your PS on another computer. Check your volt readings in the BIOS.

But if your disk makes any other noise when turned on other then normal disk rotation, that disk is bad.

I only have the molex connected, not the SATA power cables. If i use those, it makes no difference, the noise still happens. I do not have any other way of checking the drive. Yet, what are the odds, that a 2nd Western Digital HDD clicks (replaced the first one after HDD fail), with 2 different PS's... (rosewill and Antec).

I am replacing the MB/CPU combo and seeing if this helps, thats all I can do at this point, as I dont have any multimeter to check any levels, and no time to do it anwyay, as I need to RMA this to Newegg ASAP to qualify for a refund (only have until June 30th)

if the drive it self is making a clicking noise it means its near its death.

Personally i dont trust WD or anyone else besides Seagate with my harddrives.

it cant be near death I just got it. I unpacked it from neweggg and installed it. This is the 2nd one too. Both were brand new. I have never had issues with WD. I did have an issue with an IBM Deskstar drive. Died several times.

If you want to eliminate the Mboard versus the Power Supply, unplug the IDE drive cable from the Hard Drive and turn on the power. If it still makes the noise you don't like, you've eliminated the mainboard's hard drive controller as a problem.

If it does not make the click on power-up when you disconnect it from the mainboard, it may not have anything to do with the PSU.

Do what pancito suggested and turn on SMART.

A 550W power supply is more than juicy enough to pull the hardware you're running. You shouldn't have any problems. If the symptom is exactly the same between two different brands of PSU's, look elsewhere for the problem.

Are the drives set to SATA-II from the factory? If they are, does your mainboard support it?

1) Dumb questions.. how do I turn on smart, in the BIOS?

2) How can I tell that SATA - II is default from factory? Again the BIOS?

That would be a misnomer. It could just be a bad drive... another bad drive. If you can I'd try borrowing a drive from a friend and see if it makes the noise after you plug it into your computer. Then again they may not be too happy about that idea
