I read some about an external hard drive and received this today. Maybe
it's something to consider for FS9 storage. FS9 makes it On Topic.

I use an external drive to store key folders in FS9 - addon scenery,
texture, sound, scenery, aircraft, gauges, effects, and so on - the
ones that have been updated by my terrain mesh & addon files. If I
reinstall FS9, overwriting the default folders with my backups means I
get my by now very complicated, customised setup back again within an
hour or two, instead of a day or two - I'm not sure I'd even remember
all the alterations and corrections I've made to cfg, bgl, bmp files
and so on!

Of course, things like Ultimate Traffic, FSNavigator and so forth have
to be reinstalled afresh, but the kind of backup drive you merntion
has proved really useful to me. I wouldn't hesitate.

If you installed it all (inc all the extra programs like you mention) and
then export the registry entries for FS and all related add-ons, can it not
be re-registered after an OS re-install, without having to reload anything?

Sadly not. I doubt you'd be able to find all the registry entries - it
would be a nightmare task, as by no means everything would be
identifiable by a recognisable FS name. Lots of stuff doesn't get
entered into the registry in any case.
