Guys,

I need some advice on upgrading system memory to 2 Gigs.

I currently have 1 gig, 2 x 512 meg Corsiar XMS pro series DDR400 and would like to know what option would be the best.

Adding another 2 x 512 sticks or getiing rid of my current memory and going for 2 x 1 Gigs.

If you suggested the 1st option should it be the same memory?

Thanks

You are going to get some abuse for this question as its been asked so many times and people will tell you to search.

That being said im bored and will tell you

Running 2x1gb would give you the best performance.

Running 4x512 will be slower than the other option but IMO not by a great deal.

If you have the money get 2x1gb if not just buy another 2x512mb.

As for buying the same memory with the 512 as long as they are the same speed and timings as the current memory it will be fine, brand will not matter.
Buying slower memory than you have now will slow your current memory down, buying faster memory than you have now will mean they will only run as fast as your old memory. (just wasting money buy getting expensive ram to put with cheap).

Some Intel chipsets, ie 875, actually perform better with 4x512MB DDR... but most AMD chipsets do not...
I have an Opty 175 on an Asus A8R32-MVP mobo running 4x512MB Corsair XMS overclocked from 11x200MHz to 11x240MHz for 2.64GHz....
So I now have a bit faster performance than an actual FX-60!!! woot woot!
