Good evening,

I'm hoping you may be able to help me. I'm planning on building my own pc, but have never done it before (have a reasonably amount of experience with computers, just never done anything hardware-wise beyonds sticking in a new hard drive). I've been doing my best searching the forums and stuff, but can't seem to work out what would be best. At one point had decided on a D805 CPU, but then stumbled across someone suggesting other things would be better, so decided it would probably be worthwhile posting here.

It will be used for:
Some games - mostly things like football manager (i.e. no strenuous graphics), but want it to cope with the odd driving game here and there.
Output to HDTV
Music recording - (not interested in sound card suggestions, as I'm sorting that out seperately) not really intensive music, but powerful enough to cope with a decent amount of audio.

From what I've found out so far, 2GB RAM is generally regarded as being worthwhile. I'm less sure about which CPU/MBoard/RAM combination to go for.

Also, as for graphics cards: the Tv I have has a pc-input (i think - haven't got it yet, but it will be the samsung r74). Most of the graphics cards appear to have one VGA output and one digital output, or two digital outputs. I was under the impression that the VGA output will give 1:1 mapping on the Tv, which would be a good thing, and so would it be worthwhile finding a graphics card with 2 vga-outputs, or have I got the wrong end of the stick somewhere?

I'd really appreciate any help, as I've been going round in circles the last couple of weeks trying to make decisions!

Thanks

if your not gonna play the latest high requirement games then the pentiumD805 should be fine.
if you get a pentiumD make sure the motherboard you get will support core2duo. this will make it alot more future-proof

1gig ram should also be enough. more can never hurt though
make sure u get ddr2. there isnt much difference in performance between speeds, timings. if u get 2gig make sure u get 2x1gig for dualchannel

one vga and one dvi would be best coz u get the best of both worlds!
dont get two vga's but two dvi's will be ok

what graphics card model are you likely to get?
are you going to overclock?

Graphics cards was one of the bits I had least idea about to be honest. From what I can see, there are cards with similar specs, yet costing hugley different amounts! Don't want to end up with something that's a waste of time, or even far in excess of what I need.

As for overclocking, I was intending on having a go, as it seems a waste not to with the D805, but I'd need to build up a bit of courage first!

what is your price range for the graphics card?

a 7600gt should be good for most games to run very well(except for a few) and this is the best value for money card.
i think its around 150$ us but not sure coz i live in the pacific ocean
i mean australia

A 7600GT looks okay but if you want higher picture quality and more space, a X1800XT 512MB is what I would recommend.

My budget is pretty flexible. Just want to get the computer that'll do the job well, without spending excessive amounts. I'm not going to spend money for the sake of it! Will definitely look into the card you suggested. Thanks

Are they about £300 (just had a quick look)? If so, that's more than I was hoping to spend on the graphics card, and certainly on the face of it seems as though it would do more than I need it do. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

there is very little differece in picture quality
u probly wont even notice a difference

the 7600gt should be enough anyway unless u play fear, oblivion or a few others on max quality, high resolutions, 8xAA and 16xAF

the other card in the same price/performance range is the x1800gto but that is slightly more expensive

Whatever You Choose (Personally Id Choose An AMD) Be Sure And Have 2GB Of RAM, Even If You Dont Game (Much) You Will Still Find It Useful, Especially If You Plan A Future OS Upgrade To Vista (Id Rather Have Too Much Than Not Enuff)

then you need quiet system. AMD cpu and motherboard based on passively cooled cooled chipset. I just get one AMD x2 3800+ cpu and an Asus A8R-MVP. I have a passively cooled video card based on ATI x1600xt  gpu. The card is made by Asus. The PSU is a quiet Thermaltake TR2 430w.

My computer is used as a video editing and multimedia playback device and light gaming.  As well as normal stuff that are done on a computer.

If you don't need overkill power, then this X2 will give you enough for a while and will run cooler and quieter than Intel parts. DDR memory is cheap too and perform yet well enough.

I don't know about Intel too much, but if not OCed, then the 805 may b a little short on power for audio encoding task. I don't know about the heat and noise it put out thou, but if coupled with a fanless motherboard, its lower performance may make it less power hungry that the other dual from Intel.

All I can say is aim for quiet parts if you intend to play with music stuff.
